The GTO's main problem right now is the tires -- or lack of them. 245mm width mediocre performance tires do not belong on ANYTHING powered by a Corvette engine. Take the 400HP GTO, run an 1/8th tank of gas, pull all the junk out of the trunk, and shod on some Hoosier's around 285 in the back and I think you'll either break into the high-12's or come damn close.
that was in the magazine? i saw the Car and Driver that tested it and they only got a 14.4, i believe.

I have personally driven a new GTO on a track and it is very heavy and unfeeling you have no driver feedback like in my Evo or quick ratio steering. I have to say excellent engine bad platform. Yes you can sup it up and make it go fast in a straight line but as far as handling good luck unless you dump a shi* load of money into like Rhys Millen did for his drift car. And stock for stock an Evo will eat it's lunch by the way the same way a stock Evo will kill a SS Camaro or Firebird Ram air.

I love the Evo (I have an MR coming in 7 weeks, likely), but a heavily modified Corvette engine is the engine for GOD. I'm sorry. For fairly reasonable money you can send it down to Johnny L @ LPE and come back with a 650HP monster with a warranty slapped on it.

You want more? They'll give you more. There's a fair number of Monaro's out there pushing over 1,000HP. There's even one that's managed to break 2000HP, has a full interior and all the junk in the trunk, and is streetable.
GOD...? hah...

But the point is, the old adage of "there is no replacement for displacement" does hold true. My MR's destiny is already written once I procure a daily driver -- track use only. I just have expectations as to what might occur as I start surpassing the 250HP/liter barrier. I'm hoping that I won't have to start pulling the engine out every other week just to give it a once over to make sure things are alright and replace wear bits.

The LS2 on the other hand... it's making a lazy 67HP/liter. That's absolutely bloody nothing! Granted, there'll be some considerably lower limits with an aluminum block, but it's not difficult to extract a good deal of power out of that thing.

Trust me -- if my financial situation wasn't the way it was right now, I wouldn't be waiting for my Evo. I would've already grabbed a Cooper S and be paying it off so I can be set for when the C6 Z06 is out.

You might eat a GTO in a 1/8 mile race but the goat will return the favor in the 1/4 mile.

Maybe in Cali with the crappy 91 octane you have there but here in the south it aint gonna happen stock to stock. Seen it personally at Atlanta dragway and on the street.
Not trying to blow the steam out of your sails I come from having muscle cars all Chevy's and the Evo is actually my first non-American car I have ever owned. But unless you have driven both you cant really compare can you. I have and if you want to be an arm chair racer just pick up any of the magazines out like the new C&D with tests of either car and you see it in black and white... The Evo is better in every way.

As for the handling, it's rock solid and responsive. The front and rear stabilizers are mounted directly to the suspension instead of the control arms. I've tacken tight corners at 65 -70 mph with no body roll and the tires never broke traction.

Looks pretty good with 400... but you can get a cherry z06 with hardly any miles for low 30's...a used z06 is the best domestic option I think

I have seen an Evo kill a GTO in the 1/8 mile numerous times. I've also seen the same GTO kill the Evo in the 1/4. Both were stock. The Evo also has the problem with the drive system as it's not meant for drag racing. Evo's do better with rolling starts since the drive system is parasitic.

Evo's are awesome vehicles in their own right... so is the GTO.

My goat will be fitted for a functional hood with scoops and a low drag body kit. The next options will be the Z06 heads and cam with Procharger super charger to round out the vehicle. I'll be over 500 horses to the rear wheels. I'm in no rush to get it there. It's all good!
