What do you guys think of the 300zx?

Hey,

I was in an accident a few weeks ago with my lancer (got cut off and rear-ended the guy) and Im looking for another car if AAA tells me it's totaled.

I was looking at a 1990 - 1996 Nissan 300zx (twin-turbo, preferably), but other people I know don't want me to go that route becasuse it will be 8 - 14 years old and lots of miles.

What do you guys think?! Also, I know the bluebook value, but what should I be paying to pick up one of these?

Thanks,
Jimmy

if u get one. u have to get twin turbo. And there are a lot of upgrades for that car. looks pretty tight too. the only downside in that car is the engine bay is way too crapped to work in. but other then that its nice.

I've driven one, the car is OK, but very heavy, chassis dynamics aren't the greatest (understeer then lots of oversteer when the turbos spool). Brakes were a weak point the one I drove kept warping rotors due to the heat build up hauling down it's massive girth.
YMMV,
Greg

great drifting car... not such a great track car... it is good for 1/4 mile too if you can lighten it up a bit and put some money into the engine

sweet. How reliable are the peices under the hood given how old it is? Would I be looking at butt-load of time trying to fix it?

I have a z, pulls hard on highways but if it goes down, get ready for a big hole in ur pocket. Zs are pretty reliable but its high matinence. Cramped engine bay, weight, cost of repairs...all came into my mind when i bought my z. I was only 16 when i got it. But im happy with it.

They are sweet cars. A friend of mine's got one with twin ballbearing turbos running 19.5 psi ... and twin RFLs.. the thing is retarded fast and the rfls sound hella sweet. We lined up on 78 (a three lane highway) with me on the left, the 300 in the middle, and a supra TT on the right - hit it from a 50 roll, he left us like we were standing still.

Anyway, it sucks that you have to pull the engine to do any turbo work, but they are sexy, fast, and relatively problem-free if given proper TLC... so I say go for it.

my low down on the dream car Z...
1996 TT 300zx has been a dream car since i can remember well 96...lol
great car! the only bad thing about it is \
1) engine bay is really crampped(as stated in an earlier post)
a) due to this if you ever needed work done on your car be prepared for a hefty labor bill
2) only a 2 seater
3) heavy
4) really hard to find one that has been maintained and kept clean especially a TT
5) a decent kept TT will run about 12-13k thats the price of a new RA

pro's
1) its a Z...
2) not something that you see everyday(moded)
3) nissan is reliable
4) it comes in a t-top

Good car, but I'd rather have a Twin Turbo RX-7 or a VR4, but the Z is also a good car. Still one cannot under estimate it's potential when modified correctly. If you have the funds, you could see 550WHP-600WHP no problem.

Overweight, understeering pigs

Power is fun, but it doesn't do anything else particularly well

At least that's how I'd describe the 300ZX TT that I drove....as always, YMMV
