Description:
After 15 years in the Evo community I am dropping out due to retirement. I'm 56 and have daily driven an Evo 8 since 2003. The car I'm selling now I bought used in 2013 with 27,000 miles. It was unmolested then and has remained that way. Only non stock items are an HKS cat back exhaust, carbon fiber trunk (no wing), Buscher Racing street tune - see attached printout (longer boost period, slightly higher rpm limit, reduced A/F ratio, slight advance in timing tables), K&N air filter (stock box), aftermarket stereo head unit (stock stereo comes with car), aftermarket rear speakers and slightly darker tint windows. I have driven it 68 miles daily since I bought it (all highway). Extremely reliable; never let me down. All oil changes and maintenance done at right times. Timing belt, balance shaft belt, water pump, serpentine all done by Buscher. Newer alternator, tires and oxygen sensors. Passes E-check; no check engine lights in the 5 years I've owned it. In very good shape, driven only 3 years in winter always garage kept. Only rust is some indicated by the boxes on the drivers side rear wheel well. You will not be disappointed. No trades-serious only. I am only on this site intermittently, please PM me if interested with email and I will answer questions.
- Rust underneath? I’d give the bottom a 7/8 out of 10. Driven three years in winter. The car was Zeibart rustproofed right when new. Every fall its put on a lift, power wash and then touch up with rubberized undercoating. The heavy steel parts, crossmembers, etc., were hit with POR15. It was taken for the front cross member “rust recall” to the dealer a year ago and was given a “no service needed”. I will try to get it up on a lift to take pictures but I’m newly retired as of tonight and I am going on vacation and may not get to it till the end of July when I return.
- Do you have the wing and original trunk? No. I’m a wingless guy.
- Do you have all receipts? Receipts I have from the first owner (0-28K miles; LOTS of THEM!) who along with the clueless dealer chased an intermittent CEL from new. That’s why the guy sold it, he thought the car was a lemon. All they could do was keep replacing parts to see if it would fix it – what idiots. I bought it, did some diagnostics, checked the basics (Occam’s razor) and determined an intermittent bad coil wire from the factory. As for receipts after 28K miles not so much. Firstly, it never has issues. Secondly, I do almost all my work, it’s my hobby. I may have or can get the receipt for the belt, water pump and tensioner from Buscher who did it around 85K.
- What Dyno and what octane tune? It was a mustang Dyno Buscher tune. As you may know the Mustang Dyno is more conservative that the Dyno jet (most say about 10-12%). The printout you see is the 2nd run of 4. The final run which I didn’t take a picture of is smoother although not much more power. 93 was in the tank at the tune. I asked for a conservative tune since I wanted a long term reliable car.
- Why selling it? It’s been my DD and I’m retiring and already have 5 car toys and am thinking of buying a ZR1. It’s hard to part with that and move on since I’ve been DD’ing an Evo 8 since 2003.
- Is the price negotiable? Not initially, perhaps in a while if it doesn’t sell. As of tonight it will get washed, a cover goes on it and it goes in the garage with the rest of the toys waiting for the next owner. I will not be DD’ing it after today.
- What’s bad? Nothing that stands out. Its original clutch (but good in that it shows the good way the car was treated). My first Evo’s’ original clutch went at 125K so I assume this one will be needed in the next 12K or so. No signs of slippage in 5th gear now. Slight rust in rear drivers’ quarter as shown in picture. Front Struts-although they don’t leak or make any noises I suspect due to age one may want to replace them sometime (I replaced my first Evos’ at about 130k). Coolant will need replaced-its 3 years old. I keep having trouble with the passenger side trim over the rain drip edge-for some reason it keeps coming up-I’m about to take it to a body shop with a new plastic snap kit to get it professionally installed.
- What’s good? Things that are newer/been replaced since I’ve owned it: Serpentine belt, timing belt, water pump, balance shaft belt, rotors, pads (z26 ceramic)-good brakes, no pulsation:, Tires (got a good half tread left-without weird wear patterns); both front wheel bearings; oil pan and oil cooler hoses (preemptive), oxygen sensors, alternator, battery (18 months old), plugs and radiator hoses.
- Lubrication? Mobil1 10W30; trans, transfer case and rear end - Redline synthetic.
