Thinking of getting an Evo...
Hi guys, I have a 2002 WRX that I swapped in a JDM sti version 7 motor/tranny/rear diff/brakes/spec-c suspension.
It's pretty great, and it's definitely unique, however there are just a ton of things I want to do it to make it a complete package... things that the new 05 sti and Evos already have (better steering, more sorted suspension, stronger hubs, etc).
I would probably go used, and I would probably be interested in a well sorted modded evo. I've got a couple questions, and since the questions are pretty broad I figured I'd ask the local folk.
How are the reliability of the Evos? I don't beat on my transmission (heel-toe and not very many launches) but I definitely feel secure with my sti 6-speed. Is the Evo transmission strong? how about the MR? How about the gear ratios? If any of you have driving a WRX you know how crappy the gear ratios are, it was a major reason I did my sti swap. Do you have any problems like not being able to downshift into 1st even while revmatching like a WRX?
Motor. What is fuel cut? How high (rpm) does a stock evo make power? How about a well sorted evo? What is a well sorted evo? I've noticed a lot of guys have cams, which is not a big choice in the subaru community because it's a pain in the *** to get to. Those of you with modded cars, how is your reliability? I'm not looking for 4-500 whp but I'd like a decent amount of power over stock. What is an example of a well sorted Evo? What should I look out for, what tuners are reputable, as the tune is very important.
Any other things I should know about? Dealer relations?
Oh also, how hard is it to source a Evo VII hood and bumper?
Sorry for all the questions, but thanks in advance.

Evo is a great mod-happy-driver buy. Strong cars, very forgiving. I could go on for pages as to why an Evo should be a good buy for someone looking to "play" with their car and make great horsepower #'s.
PPS. You have alot of technical questions. Unfortunately - no one answer is satisfactory. You will have to search this forum to locate the ideal tune or tuner for your Evo, and ideal part combination that will work for you. There is really no single way to go about the car - but that's the fun part.
Basic bolt-on's costing you from $2k-$6k will net your around 300-350whp depending on what you are really wanting. Cams do amazing things to this motor unlike the results seen with other motors. AMS basically summed it up with there's no one way to do everything. Lots of options and very similar to a WRX.
Stock fuel cut is 7600, I see a lot of folks going to 8k with just headstuds. I personally like to shift around 7300-7400 where I feel it...
Lots of tuning options which I wish I could answer that one for you but that's more so of what you want. Tweakable and tuneable by yourself or just turn the key and go. I've heard the gears in the MR seem to work perfect but I love the 5 speed in my RS.
