Summer tires in Wisconsin?
Summer tires in Wisconsin?
Ok so i have searched and searched, and can not really find any help at all. i am looking for a set of tires that will handle my almost everyday driving in the summer, but still have enough grip for when i go to the track. To be Honest with you i have an 06' Yamaha R6 coming at the end of January, so on the nice days in summer i will probably be driving that more than the EVO. My plan is to also have the Buschur stage 1-4 upgrades also for next summer, so i will have quite a bit of power. I just want to get peoples opinions on tires that actually have them here in wisconsin, because the weather here is very unpredictable, not even weather reporters know what the heck's going on. Plus its always road construction, and the roads suck here. anyways if people could point me in the right direction it would be great!
I am not really a big fan of Kumho Tires, something more along the lines of Toyo, Yokohama, BFG, or anything else, just not Kumho, they seem like a cheap tire to put on a car, but hey i may be wrong, again any advice would be great

My friend has the mx's on his car and they are pretty good i have to say.....No winter driving for him...i have the asx's on my car...but i drive in the winter too. Of course they are not as good as the advans but they are good for daily driving i like them.
yeah i heard a lot of thing about kumho being a cheaper tire. i didn't buy a cheaper car, why would i treat my car that way, i'm not afraid to spend the extra money to get some good tires.
In my opinion, it's very hard to beat the stock tires for best all-around performance. I use my car as a daily driver and as a weekend autocross and track warrior. I have experience on the Evo with stock Yokos and the Hankook RS-2, and I prefer the stock tires. The downside to the stock tires is cost and a little rougher of a ride. You can find used take-off tires usually pretty easily for much less than they cost new. I picked up 4 for free that lasted 1/2 an autocross season and 2 more that are still on the car that cost me $70.
If you want to take performance up a notch, I would go with the Toyo RA1's. I've heard good things on the forum about them for both track days and for daily driving. They'll wear faster than the Yokos, but not by much.
Hope that helps.
By the way, you never mentioned what size rims you are on. That could make a difference in your tire choices too.

I have MX's on my car for daily use. I have another set of stock wheels with Advans that I use as my race wheels.
The MX are great everyday tires and I know a few others that use them for race as well. For low speed autocross the side walls aren't nearly as stiff as the advans but for high speed stuff they are great tires that seem to last a very long time.
I used my MX's for drag racing and on cold pavement I can easily get a 1.8 without launching hard.
I know you say you hate Kumho but they are a sexy tread pattern, good grip, long wear, and are cheap!

no i never said i really hated Kumho, just that they seem to be a little cheaper than others, i am a firm believer in you get what you pay for. so it just raises a little question in my mind. i did look them up they do have a very nice tread pattern.
as for my rims i will be using the stock ones. i would like to pick up another set sometime in the future, but its not on the list of things to but right now. i want my car to look stock but with some serious ponies.
so right now either the stock tires, Kumho, or Toyo? i was seriously considering the Toyo's before i put this thread up, its good that someone else brought them up. if i wasn't going to get any real feedback then i was going to get the stock Advans again. but any other help would be great
thanks for the help so far.

Honestly....your very best option is to buy a slightly used set of stock wheels in the forsale forum. I purchased a set from an 05 with 1k miles on them for $850. At the same time I purchased new KUMHO MX tires...Mounted total of the Kumho was $650 but I didn't get any wheels. I kinda kick myself in the *** for buying new tires when I know I could have purchased another complete set of wheels for nearly the same price.
One tire nobody has mentioned is the Falken Azenis, grips almost as well as the Advans, sidewall is probably as stiff, and they are a lot cheaper than the Advans. If I wanted a 'summer' tire, that's probably what I would get. I seem to remember that they were scheduled to come out with our size or maybe a 245 around now.
The Kumho is a decent tire, I have driven an Evo on those and they are nice and predictable, but don't have the grip levels or the sharp feeling of the Advans.
Disclaimer: I have never driven on the new Azenis and have never driven an Evo with Azenis on. I did have a set of the old ones on my WRX though and everything I have heard about the new ones is that they are better.

I called a local tire place around here in neenah, and he could get me the set of Toyo RA1's mounted and balanced on my rims for 787.47, plus tax, there's a special buy three and get the 4th free, he said they have been running the special for about a month and a half now, its usually a pretty common sale they run. it would also take about a week to get, which is not a big deal. i think the price sounds pretty awesome. i may have to get them
Yeah that doesn't sound like that great of a deal. Everywhere I look online they are about $185 shipped ea. So $740 for 4. Buy 3 get one free brings the price down to $555. That means mounting and balancing is costing you around $230. Not that great in my opinion. Ask him how much for the set unmounted and find somewhere else to mount them.
