Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July
For you Illinois drivers out there...not sure if it's a repost but should definitely be taken as a warning...take heed!
"Illinois will begin using photo radar in freeway work zones in July. Second
offense tickets are $1,000 with license suspension. Beginning in July the
State of Illinois will use speed cameras in areas designated as "Work Zones"
on major freeways. Anyone caught by these devices will be mailed a $375.00
ticket for the FIRST offense, but the SECOND offense will cost $1000.00 and
comes with a 90-Day Suspension. Drivers will also receive demerit points
against their license, which allows insurance companies to raise their
rates. This represents the harshest penalty structure yet for a city or
state using PHOTO enforcement's. The State will begin with TWO camera vans
issuing tickets in work zones with speed limits lowered to 45 MPH.
Photographs of both the Driver's face and License plate are taken."
Pass this on to everyone you know !!!!

Thats pretty harsh fines but its to protect the workers. If it was more then just the work zones I would be very upset but this isnt to bad as it is completly for saftey!

Just another way for IL to get their money.
All this without a officer having to lift a finger.
I understand it is to protect workers.....but honestly about half the time I cross construction zones there is NO ONE there.

The problem with that is it only works if the camera has a flash.

I think they should since these cameras only trigger when the radar detects the car moving at high speeds.... in that case i better get my radar fixed or get a new one...
Bringing this back to life, just a reminder to everyone that they're back at it again this year.
There's also a PDF of Q&A, if you're interested; note the mandatory court appearance, which means your total cost out the door will probably be over $500 on the first offense. Snopes has an article about this, because it's been forwarded around so much lately; the IDOT press release I linked to above was issued June 24, 2009, so enforcement efforts are still on-going, no matter what the Internet skeptics tell you.
Someone on chicagoautox actually snapped a cameraphone picture of one of the vans yesterday on I-88:

Two-time offenders are subject to a $1,000 fine, including a $250 surcharge to hire Troopers, and the loss of their license for 90 days. Tickets received in a work zone require a mandatory court appearance.
