I'll be racing the EVO all next year. Now I need to sell my Mazdaspeed Protege.

Erik,

I'm from Madison too and am hoping to get an Evo soon...where did you get yours?

Any chance I could get a ride in yours some time or we could just meet and talk...I have a lot of questions and the local dealer here (while pretty friendly) isn't that accomodating for test drives...but I don't blame them really.

...I'm not a stalker

I got my EVO from Kayser off the beltline. I never test drove it. Actually I never even got within a couple feet of it. The sales people were actually pretty cool. We could probably meet sometime. Where about in Madison do you live? -Erik

Hey Erik...

Thanks again for the ride in your mazdaspeed.. definitely helped with me getting the course right after that. Too bad I was banking on 3 runs for our last heat and not 2. Oh well. :-)

I'll look forward to watching you race that EVO next year... But my Silver Lancer (I'm the "faster" Lancer by Bob's designations ) will be turboed and have improved brakes and struts so that should help a little bit.. that and I'm going to try and get to some driving schools and so forth.

I liked the Miller Course a lot actually.. even if I did DNF my first 3 runs. I didn't think that it was horribly complex.. I was just horribly stupid pretty much :-). I always like how complicated the courses are. Means you actually have to drive and get your lines and so forth right instead of just driving on your hp instead.

I actually haven't had that great of luck with the Kayser salesman. The mitsu service there has been pretty great though. I talked to one of the salesman about buying an OZ from them originally and they would deal with me at all... I ended up going down to Sycamore Illinois where they had the sticker price 2,000 lower to start with and they were willing to knock another few hundred off in negotiating. So I was much happier with them... and the salesman saw my car later and I told him flat out what happened... he felt like an *** after that :-)

"Felt like an ***". haha Most dealers in Madison won't come down in price if at all for a new car. No competition here. We were going to do three runs for the last heats but a lot of people complained we'd be there too long. Guess they needed to get to bed early. -Erik

Erik,

I live on the east side of Madison, near Woodman's East and the Post Office...

I'm home from work around 5:30 or so most nights...otherwise this weekend might work as my plans are still up in the air...

I saw a red Evo going to Milwaukee this weekend...only my second on the street...I think they're pretty rare around Madison yet.

The Kayser salesman were nice...it's great to hear their service is good too.

Email me at t4upgrade@yahoo.com if this week will work for you...

I kind of wish Madison had a more active Lancer/Evo community. Hardly hear or see anything of anyone with the cars. I've talked to one kid with a Black Evo in town... and I've seen a red one and another black one on the streets.

Had I had the money or been able to hold off until graduating on getting a new car I would have scored an EVO... but I have a Lancer instead... and i'm going to make the most of it. She'll be a quick little FWD 4 banger when I'm done with her. I'd lose too much money trading it in or getting rid of it (I was looking at getting a Mazdaspeed for a while... but not so much anymore) so I figured screw it... ***** to the wall 10K budget we'll see what I can make it in to.

I actually have yet to ride in or drive an EVO... partly because I figure if I do I'll want to cast away my Lancer or something :-).

Erik.. any idea how many turns it is lock to lock on the steering in the EVO? The lancer is just shy of 3 from when I've tried it... curious as to how it matches to the EVO.

Lithe,

I'd also try and hold out until the 2004 EVO... if you read around some on here there are a number of minor upgrades that will be present on the 04's that will be worth waiting for...

Sdhotwn,

Thanks for the advice about the '04....despite all the rumored improvement talks...I tend to believe that there will be no changes for the '04. That's what they told me at Kayser and that seems to be the concensus after all the rumors are rationalized. I could be wrong though...who knows?

I will wait for an '04 in any case...I'll be selling my Golf in the spring and look to buy around June or July.

The only improvement that might be nice for me is a six speed...all the other power improvements can be don easily enough by the aftermarket and the computer AWD technology that the rest of the world gets is overkill for the street and just more money in upkeep and pontial mechanical problems.

Kayser did say that a stripped version is likely...no power windows, locks, no AC or radio, etc. Trade your Lancer in on that

Man... you aren't supposed to tempt me like that!!! I wonder how much that bad boy will be... problem is I'm planning to start the Turbo and the like by early May.

Also too.. with putting 10K in to my car I"m still only at 26K. If I sell the fool thing I'm probably only going to get like 8K for it... so yeah... hard to justify losing nearly 8K on a car just for an EVO... i'll get one in a few years.. I'm not too worried :-).

And I agree with you too that some of the stuff just gets to be overkill for the street. Part of why i'm content with my lancer for now... I have it handling very well and it'll have the horsepower eventually.... it's a little safer to throw around than an EVO. From talking to Erik, the EVO isn't quite as forgiving as a well handling front wheel drive... so for now I have what I want... Sides... a project car is kind of a nice thing in it's own right.

I was a bit surprised that they were going to make changes for 04... and the specs I've found online are the same as the 03's as well... I just gave the rumors more credit

Later.

Steve

I'll have to check on the lock to lock turns. It has a very quick ratio steering rack. Really nice when going through tight turns on an autocross. Hey sdhotwn, don't ride or drive an EVO. You'll definitely want to get rid of the Lancer. I bet Mitsubishi will have an improved version of the EVO in a couple years. Probably cost more though. Buy a Mazdaspeed. I gotta sell mine. I think Kayser has sold 7 or more EVOs. They've gone through a lot. I actually like the gearing of the 5-speed in the EVO. It really doesn't need a 6-speed. Not that I wouldn't take one. -Erik

*cough* excuses *cough*

Just kididn.. you have a legitimate point there.. tires make such a big difference in Auto-x. I'm hoping to have Hoosier slicks for next year .

But how bad is Erik going to feel if I beat him in my little Lancer and he's driving that big bad EVO? I'll just keep dreaming or something... Since the closest I ever got all year was about 1 second behind... I'll be a loser and blame it on my 91 whp .
