Newbie Wideband Questions

I posted some questions on the General Tuning forum, since it's the most appropriate area, but I have gotten to know and respect the people who hang out here in ECUFlash land. So anyway, I was hoping to hear some feedback/opinions from you all as well. Sorry for the cross-post:

FWIW, I have used wideband before and after a CAT with no differnce in reading....the readout was just a little 'smoother' after cat, without as much jumping around. This was a hi-flow cat, though.

Currently, I run my wideband with a new bung welded to the downpipe, just before the cat. There is a nice little grommet there that lets you bring the wires inside the car.

As far as your other points, I would go with the permanent install. I'm not sure about the sensor that the AEM uses, but both of mr cars that have had widebands were permanent installs. And if you thinks your sensor is going, you get a new one pretty cheap (Bosch).

Powering up the sensor with the car off shouldn't harm the sensor (after all that's really how you should calibrate it for free air), but I heard that it is possible to harm the sensor if it is run in the exhaust path without being powered up.

Install before the cat at as close to 12:00 (on top) as you can. The condensation that collects in the downpipe is bad for the sensor. Too close to the turbo is too hot for the sensor.

Is there room on top of the exhaust (at any point) to mount it there?

not on the top. Basically you just dont want the sensor at the bottom(closest to the pavement) b/c the condensation can get onto the sensor and then you will have to replace it.

Hi

I've got mine mounted on the top of the decat, just where it meets the down pipe. You could also get the bung welded in the down pipe, there's plenty of room just before the Cat joint.

There actually is room on top. I moutned mine at about 10:00, but I wish I did 12:00, because it is just about in the way of the downpipe bar now. There is a little grommet that goes up into the center console area on the passenger side. It's sort of towards the end of the downpipe. There is room to put a wideband at 12:00 there.

Thanks for the replies, guys. Searching under "wideband location" has also helped a lot. I guess my main curiousity now is the pre-cat vs. post-cat point. How is it that we 'must' mount it pre-cat, but most of the dyno tunes just use the stock bung location (post-cat)?

The afr should be the same throughout the exhaust despite of location. I believe that the instructions say to mount it b4 the cat because it is far enough to not be damaged from the turbo heat and not so far that the readings may become lagged.
