Good news... 255/40 tires fit...

On the stock rims Kumho V700 255/40-17 tires fit on the Evo and clear the suspension... barely. As in, maybe 1/4 - 5/16" between the tire shoulder and the spring seat on the front struts. This is the widest tire you can fit on the car without spacers or different wheel offset. A 255/45 would likely hit the strut.

Side by side the V700s make the stock Advans look wimpy, as they are almost 1" wider, and look bigger than that due to the squared shoulders. They also take the car to a new handling level, crazy grip becomes ludicrous grip on corners. Need to g-tech it and see if I can pull a +1 g corner...

Yeppers. I mounted the V700s on the stock rims to use for autocrossing. I am going to use the stock Advans on my new RPM2 rims for normal street use.

Does anything rub anywhere? Under suspension compression? Turning the steering wheel all the way to the right and left? Do you have to roll the fenders?

Cool.. .
However in every car I have ever owned, buying wider tires ( and keeping the same size rims ) the cars have handled worse, much more side wall collapse etc.

Just my experience

How is the clearance on the fenders? Since I ended up with +33mm offset, I would be 5mm closer to the fender than you and 5mm further away from the suspension.

WRT the V700s, I ran mine this past weekend for the first time, but I could never get any heat in them -- too damned cold and windy -- so I don't think they gave me that much of an edg eover the stock tires. Some, but not a lot. Looking forward to warmer days, if they ever come.

I am also not using the inner part of the tire very well. The inside 3/4" on my rear tires looked like they had never even touched the pavement and the inside 1/2" of the front barely looked like it had done any work at all. And that was with -1.7 camber in the front too...

2cool what size are your RPM2 wheels and where are you getting them? I would like to get a set of 18s myself.

Question Tire Size

Since you are only going 5% on the aspect ration, shouldn't you only increase the section width by 10 mm, to maintain the same rolling diameter? This would give you 245/40R17.

Adios,

The sidewalls on Victoracer V700s are about the stiffest you will find, and most national autocross champions run the maximum tire that will fit on their rim, often cramming 225s on 6" wide rims. Yet they are the guys that win. Don't apply normal tire knowledge to race tires, it doesn't work.

No rubbing anywhere, nowhere near the fenders of a stock height car. I am working on finding eccentric crash bolts to replace the stock ones to allow greatter camber adjustment.

Now for normal tires I would go with 245s at the widest, and actually prefer them over the 235s for the 8" rims. I will put some Kumho MX's on the street rims when the Advans are worn out.

The RPM2 rims are 17" by 8" with a 35mm offset. So basically they will sit 3mm further outboard than the stock 38mm offset rims.

Have you auto-xed with those yet? I am going to be looking to put some auto-x tires on my stock rims as well and really don't have enough tire knowledge to make an informed decision yet. I just want to make sure I can add some tires like these without moving out of stock class and without having to do any other modifications.

I am off to Sebring this weekend, as there is a two day points event for the central Florida SCCA scheduled. It will be solo II, but a bit longer track and faster than most events. I'll get pics and let ya know how the tires work out. I am driving on them for two days to heat cycle them before the weekend, and so far they grip like the car is on rails, much tighter than the stock tires.
