How can I get more power from a stock car? What timing are you running?

Hey all,

After a lot of tuning, my stock GSR feels good, especially in the mid-range. However, the top end (5500-7000 rpms) feels like it could be improved more. With the boost tuned to hit 24 psi peak tapering to 18-19 psi, how can I make more power without adding boost?

Is adding more timing the way to go? Or do I simply need better airflow through the car? If I add a turboback exhaust, and tune for the same exact boost and AFR, will the car still make more power? I don't want to run any more boost or any leaner than it already is tuned for.

Also, how much timing advance are people running? I'm dropping to about 8 degrees at peak torque, going up to about 20 degrees at redline. Thanks for any ideas! BTW, my AFR is 11-11.3:1.

upgrade the turbo.

What ignition timing other people run has little to do with your car.

time for $$$'s

timing isn't a magic stick, you can only run what you can run.

if you want more power - either:
1) turbo upgrade
2) meth/water injection
3) E85

I don't know your whole mod list but sounds like you could still use some bolt ons like a turbo back exhaust. If you tune for it you certainly will make more power from the increased airflow post turbo. If you want to trade some low end torque for better mid and top end power then look into a larger turbo setup. Your timing is already a few degrees higher than what I had on my car with stock turbo and full bolt ons so likely you are about as high as you can go before inducing knock.

Thanks for the feedback everyone...without going to a larger turbo or better fuel, it sounds like improved airflow would help. With tuning, would a test pipe or upper intercooler pipe make a bigger difference? My guess is the test pipe, simply because I don't necessarily want to run MORE boost (91 octane), and if I tune with an UICP it will make more boost, but I'll end up tuning that out, ending up with the same amount of boost/power. Does that make sense?

A test pipe (if you can stand the smell) would be the best bang for the buck. I actually did notice a diff. in my car with my HKS ic pipes. Smoother and slightly faster spool up.

The difference was MUCH more noticeable when i installed my HFC. Should be even better with a test pipe.

if someone has time can they do a tuned stock VS tuned HFC/testpipe dyno (or VDR) log?

that way we can put to bed these claims that HFC or testpipe make a big difference

here you go.

Stock cat vs Test pipe, just bolting it on.

Cool.

You got a boost/afr chart to go along with that?

I'll try to remember to print it out this week. The weirdness up top was some knock and error correction kicking in.

I installed a boost pill and went on to tune it for pill and the test pipe and it ended up doing this:

nice..

so you think HFC is worthwhile? or does the tune bring it back to normallity?
