I think I may have found a new 3port boost solenoid...that comes on every EVO, and may be plug and play. I need someone to check it out and test it and see if it works.

Check out this diagram below. Notice the "EGR Vacuum RegulatorSolenoid Valve". It is located under the intake mani. It looks to be a true 3 port and looks like it would be PnP if used as a boost solenoid.

Maybe Mrfred or Razorlab can test it out.

Also, looked up the cost and I believe its only 47.xx, which is about the same price as the GM.

Seems like it should work to me as a direct plug and play solenoid. Only concern I'd have is that there are no hose barbs on the EGR solenoid. Not a very good thing for a boost controller.

Just a guess that it won't be quite as good as the GM, but it might be a solution for someone in a bind or good for something else that needs full blockoff capability.

Just from the pictures I would think that G-Y would be the normally connected path (providing the same pressure to both sides of the diaphragm and holding it closed at 0 DC) and then Y-W would be the resting-closed connection which, when receiving some duty would reduce the pressure in the top diaphragm by opening it to the vac/engine side of the TB.

Strange because you would think the layout would provide for Y being the always connected port.

What I really wonder is if it is PNP.

I'll try to test the resistance and ports when I pull mine off, but I'm stuck in a move so it could be a couple of weeks.

EDIT: Dang, 03 beat me to the first part . Ghetto home grown epoxy barbs with a bit of hairspray on the hose FTW?

I guess the plunger must move away from the diaphragm rather than towards it. I would think that would eat at the diaphragm quicker but what do I know? (don't answer that!)

where did you get that pic and info??

Also, you could use small zip ties, since it has no barbs

Thanks, let me know what you find out.

LOL frost, too many ninja edits.

I had both solenoids sitting in a box of stuff I've pulled out of my car. Took about 2 minutes to pull it off the plate that use to support the manifold, use a multi-meter to measure resistance, then edit the picture. It's a hack job, but it shows the basics.

Nice. Do you run ECU boost control?? If so, wanna test it out?

I don't run ECU controlled boost. My car is still tore apart anyway.

If a local wants to try it out, they are welcome to use my solenoid to test it out. I'd like to get it back in case I ever have to put it back to pass emissions.

Nice find! I have a 3port road tune tomorrow or the day after pending on weather. I'll ask the customer if he's willing to give this a shot and report back.

Cheers!

Someone get one to MrFred for his exhaustive solenoid test ASAP!

Good find!

Yeah, I was just under my newly acquired RS and was just looking around and checking out stuff and saw that solenoid and noticed that it had 3 ports and the same plug as the stock BCS.

But yeah, if it works out, it will be a very good find.

I cant send mine to MRFRED cuz I live in Cali and I have to smog this month. But someone probably has one laying around, from removing the EGR junk.

When I mention that I'm using a FPRs I get flack when I have had it on my car and know that it is easy, responsive, and holds boost like crazy. What is your reason for getting excited about this one but dismissing the other so quickly?
