tuning for idiots

Don't laugh too hard, is there a book or something comprehensive on how to tune our cars? I would like to do it myself but if its too involved or easy to screw up I will go with the AP.

Don't get the AP. Learn how to do it. There are many tuning books out there. Why have an AP... it's like tying one hand behind your back.

NP, it's something I'm getting into myself.. for both my car and my mx bike. I'm especially interested on my bike so I can change the tune for conditions. Once I have a set amount of maps, I'll be able to adjust them accordingly. High elevation, low elevation, dry, muddy, high speed, low speed. I'm hoping to learn both at the same time, but there is a little more to the car (variable valves). It would be nice if we could turn this thread into a resource for starting out how to tune.

For the record.. owning an AP gets you free access to AccessTuner.. so saying don't get the AP is basically saying "Don't tune using Cobb software"

I love my AP, and tune with AccessTuner.. no hands tied here.

This has already been debated into the ground. Fact is the accesstuner software doesn't have near the versatility that ecuflash has. Still alright. But I'll take ecuflash over the accessport any day and save hundreds on top of it. Not to mention a much larger community for support.

I'm going to study up on this and then decide If I want to jump in on it. How much of a gain do you get from a mild tune? 30whp?

I think it may be more appropriate to say that selling ice cubes to Eskimos is what we are bearing witness to.

This^^^^. The AP for the X will become a paperweight as it did for the VIII-IX platforms.

...that was my idea. (Remember, this stuff applies to the VIII/IX though, and your tuning will be similar at first but as you increase in depth and difficulty you will have to learn on your own or from other X owners)

I fail to see the justification for this argument.. Of course there's a larger community for Ecuflash.. it's 450$ cheaper (500 if you have the cable already), which means everyone and their mom can pick it up. This also means a flood of uninformed people posting their *100% accurate data.

I use the same community for figuring things out or trying new stuff with AccessTuner. The main difference being the tables are different names, but the general ideas remain. There's also no screwing with base maps. Yes, new tables are slower coming out, but there's also the fact that it will work for you immediately, no relying on someone to figure out if your ok to use the addresses posted, or finding the correct addresses for you.

My main reason for getting an AP? I don't need to bring my laptop with me to change maps. If I go on a trip and run out of E85 or come across a crappy fuel, I can plug in the AP, flash my map, off I go. Yes, if I forget my AP I am screwed, but at least I am not carrying a flashy target for theft in the vehicle.

To each their own, though. I will admit there's parts of ECU Flash I'd love to have, but I am putting down fantastic power with AT, so I am fine!
