50 degrees outside = 8 second crank time?

Right when I got my X about 2 years ago, long crank times happened to me on occasion. Then I read somewhere to do the following at start up, and things have been fine ever since:
1) turn the key to the point where you hear the beeping (right before actual ignition of the engine). 2) wait 5-8 secs.
3) turn the key to start the engine - at this point the engine starts for me consistently.
My other car, an Acura could start easily with no "waiting." But I guess every car is different.
