Hello! we are talking about my EvoX.

yes, it is make clunck - dzzzz.
But very strange thing that this sound comes only on the first engine start after the car was parked for some long time. Here is the video of second start immediately after the first
as you see, there is normal clunck - clunck.
And in general the SST works perfectly, the gears shifting is very clear.

I dont know what to do with this sound... maybe it is not the gearbox issue

at mitsubishi service they also dont know what makes this sound.

Holy smokes, that is not normal. Are you sure you put the right type and amount of fluid in?

yes, the fluid and amount of it are correct. In Europe fluid named - CASTROL TRANSMAX DUAL
the same fluid is used by all Evoclub Ukraine and everything is ok.

I made some investigations and I'm starting to believe that this sound cames not from SST..... and I realy hope that it is true

Its not the sst. The starter motor is getting hung up on the flywheel. I'm pretty sure there's a lubrication problem after it sits for a while that doesn't let the gear release and there fore the grind.

So the starter is being spun up bigtime after the engine has started, then finally disengages with a grind noise?

I've had this sound occur two times in my two years of RA ownership.

Now... the $64,000 question... has anyone with a 5MT Evolution X ever had this exact same noise? That's be very illuminating indeed, wouldn't it?

yep, im pretty sure this also has to do with the slight bump forward sometimes on start up. Think about taking a gear set apart slowly while its spinning...it will skip the teeth of the gears against each other making a grinding noise...similar to grinding gears on a manual transmission. I have not seen any gsr's with this problem, as they might have a different starter motor/flywheel.

Yesterday I was at service. We have removed the starter and then cleaned and lubricated it. The teeth on starter and flywheel are in very good condition. I made a photo

and here is the video of starter's work. it is working good.

and, unfortunately it is not helped. the sound on cold start is still present

what else it can be

can it be a timing chain issue???

You will not be able to see any marks. The duration of the noise is not that long so there's not much damage. Pretty sure its not a timing chain noise.

Today I have visited mitsubishi dealer again to check if everything is ok with timing chain. They have removed the valves cover and didnt find any problems with timing chain or tensioner. So, that sound on cold engine start is not timing chain issue.
I was trying to make some good photo but without succes.

We also re-checked the starter and now we are sure that it is not starter issue.

At the moment we have cool weather (15 degrees Celsius) and the bad sound heard after two hours of parking. So I decided to leave the car at the dealer, to determine which unit issues this sound.

I really hope that this sound is not SST issue.
