turbo lag? No this is no turbo lag... there is no throttle at all.

Sport mode is a little better and this also happens when i manually downshift...

the signal sent from the engine and your throttle is not agreeing .. this sends the SST into a state of limbo until the disagreement is resolved .. usually a lower speed / rpm or TPS ..

Happens to SSTs who are tuned with all the CELs disabled

I tried what you were explaining today after work in the RA. With my foot NOT on either of the pedals I can downshift and the tranny will stay engaged until about 1000-1100 RPM. Gear didn't seem to matter if I got that low in the RPM range it disengaged the clutches. After the clutches are disengaged, I coast without any engine braking. Same happens if I have my foot on the brake.

however occasionally in the past I have noticed sometimes it's like the SST doesn't engage when slowing down and I have experienced what you are talking about. I havn't been able to replicate it though it seems as though it has a mind of it's own sometimes.

EDIT: Just realized the OP was from some time ago

A couple of thoughts; yes the SST does have a mind of its own, the TCU program will "guess" at when to disengage the clutch to prevent lugging the motor or stalling at a stop just like a human should probably do if operating the clutch manually. If one wants to utilize engine braking to any kind of effect rpm's should be maintained at 2500 or higher imo.

I agree 100%. I think people need to get out of the mindset that this is an "auto" tranny, and treat it more like a manual. Act like you're driving it WITH a clutch in manual, if you can imagine it perhaps you can read what the SST is doing.

dont know about you guys but my mr in auto normal will engine brake me to literally a idle roll. In manual i control it, and can come usually from an 60-70km/h zone to a stop within everyone elses braking range in normal cars and i havent even touched my brakes except the last 5 feet to make a complete stop. In sport it just shifts quicker, same engine braking to a stop almost.

Modify the way you drive the car taking into consideration what inputs the AI needs from you to decide on what you want the SST to do at that specific instance.

When cruising lets say at about 40-50 miles in 5th gear and you need to make a 90 degree turn, as we turn, the car downshifts to 3rd gear and when we step back on the throttle, there is NO response.. we tap it like 5-6 times and its just dead! The car is running but there is ZERO throttle response... this was really confusing! Any Ideas?
Was it a hard (fast) cornering? There would've been the ASC wheel skid graphic displayed on the dash thingie.

If yes, then disable the first stage of the ASC - throttle control. Go test again.

Nope.. not at all a hard turn.. really easy slowing down and going through the turn....

im curious but am I the only one who feels that engine braking is not as strong in the SST than in the EVO GSR? I can feel the engine braking in the GSRs a lot more, is it just that the SST clutches are smaller or something?

No, that isn't why. It's because the SST automatically rev-matches for you. Sport and Super-sport rev match more aggressively than normal mode.

In race cars engine braking is actually a bad thing. You don't want to break traction, which is what happens when you go into a 40mph corner at 90mph and downshift without rev-matching.

if the sst decides it can't handle any throttle then it will keep the throttle closed. scary.
