1st gear slow to shift at WOT?

Anyone experience this? WOT in 1st gear, click the paddle at redline, and the car keeps revving almost to the limiter before it finally shifts? does fine in every other gear. this happened in two cars i test drove at different dealerships months apart, and in the EVO X SE i just bought.

anyone else notice this, or know how to make it NOT happen?

I think its common in SST 1st gear. Gets a little better when warmed up. I have been hitting the paddle a few hundred rpm sooner to anticipate it. Dont know if theres a fix for it.

I drive a 2011 RA, but I have the same "issue"

I just think it's the computer preserving the clutch. This issue also seems worse when the transmission hasn't warmed up it. If I'm aggressive off the line just a few minutes of starting the car, it seems to hold at redline for a bit before shifting (sometimes bouncing off the rev limiter)

fyi, my torque is about 250 to the wheels at 6k RPM. I'm sure tuned Evo's are at much more, but I still have this hesitant 1st gear shift.

I just shift a little earlier in 1st. I think it's just the TCU wanting to protect the transmission from too much abuse, and I don't mind it too much

try it in S-Sport, it's supposed to increase the clamping pressure

It's a torque management "feature"

Gets really worse with more boost and torque, as in, won't shift at all until you let off.

The "fix" I did was run lower boost in 1st and 2nd. I find the "limit" is a bit lower in the RA vs the MR which makes it even more interesting.

I'm working on getting to the bottom of the actual code... it's a "be careful what you wish for" type of safety I believe though.

Leave it in sport mode do not shift it let it shift on its own! and it will run way better than doing it yourself.. i had seen that and then i left it in auto mode and sport and did the same launch and wala!!! no more BS!

i leave it in S-Sport all the time, and I shift myself. I just happen to go WOT a lot, so it's annoying to know that I can't go WOT in 1st gear whenever I want.

On my friend's car that I'm prepping I moved the limiter to 8k, and also reduced the max TPS on the tables at the 8k point so that past 7.5k it dials back the throttle from 100% down to 30% automatically. Seems to give it enough time to react and make the shift at 7900 for me without bouncing the limiter. Every other gear seems to shift earlier so for now it seems to avoid the issue. I kind of a call it a "soft limiter" of sorts, I found that dropping the throttle too low will make it feel like you are hitting a wall since you are letting off the gas with no place for all that airflow to go so 30% seems like a good compromise.

I just reprogrammed the rom to run different boosts between all the gears ..

only the 1st 2 gears have lower limits ..
2nd gear can accept higher torque ..

removing the torque reduction at WOT actually makes the misshifts even worse .. ie the throttle closing when you go WOT ..

Just take your foot of the gas exacty at the moment you shift...and you will see it shifts exactly when you want...
And get back on the gas immediately after...you wont lose any time and the shift will be spot on...

Well I'm not removing the torque reduction at WOT.

Maybe you misread what I was doing, I'm reducing the Throttle Map #1-5 at the 8000 rpm mark so that as the car exceeds 7500 it essentially lets off the throttle even when you have it pinned to the floor. I've tested this and don't see how slowing down the acceleration to 30% throttle as the car tries to shift would make the shifts harder to complete. It does this with interpolation so at 7600 it is limiting to 86%, 7700 = 72%, 7800 = 58%, 7900 = 44%, and 8000 = 30%. You can make the curve steeper by changing the RPM entries but I really don't want him revving much past 7500 if he doesn't need to and this seemed like a good balance.

While it's not common to adjust these maps I've found that there are things that can be handy when changing them. I plan on doing a full writeup of what I found within the next week.

That is exactly what modding the Throttle Maps will do for you without having to manually lift off the gas as it is about to shift. I like automated when it comes to avoiding the limiter.
