My bad. I guess being from Mass you may not be aware that GingerMan is a road course, hence, it is for track days-as is my stance.

Just heard from the SCCA Technical Dir Doug Gill. They're still looking into the helmet/airbag issue.... I asked if the SCCA tabled it or if they're still looking into having something done about it.

No, it's not a dead issue, there is a lot more research to be done. It's just an advisory and it will stay an advisory until more data is collected. The SEB is not in any hurry to make any rule changes concerning helmets.
(SEB is the Solo Events Board for Auto-x.) So at least for this year, I don't think a closed face will be a problem.

I would buy an open face now if I were in the market for a new auto-x helmet-both because it is not likely to be outlawed soon and because of the airbag saftey concern.

thanks for the info. i looked at all the sites you guys recommended and found that all of them sell bell. others like simpson, which is what i was planning to get, was only on one of the sites. is this because of some safety issue? is bell better than any other brand? or is it just popularity?

nope, Bell is for round heads, no, I believe you will find a wide choice of helmets and happy heads in them. Simpson & Bell are two widely used helmets that cover a wide range of prices. IOW you ought to be able to find one in a price range you want to pay. If you buy a 2001 or later(?) SA type, that FITS you, in the configuration you need then you should be good to go.
Now there are many helmet manufactures out there, They all fit a little different from brand to brand and prolly from style to style. Chose the style you want based on the rules you need to play by. Other than that, I don't think you can go to wrong buying a name brand helmet.
Arai
Import Racing
Bell
Simpson
to mention just a few.

Frankly, I'm not sure if one is better than the other, or if Ford is better than Chevy, but I do know that my wife has an OMP helmet which is lighter (and more expensive) than mine. It is amazing how much heavier my helmet feels when I move my head from side-to-side--we're only talking ounces here, as both helmets weigh less than a pound.

Since the original poster didn't say AX or track day, I'll chime in. I bought my helmet at helmetshop.com it's a KBC TK8 fullface motorcycle helmet and has both DOT (meaningless in terms of actual protection) and the SNELL M2000 cert. I believe it was $120 with an additional smoke colored visor, shipped. I'm of the opinion that if you rollover at an AX (highly unlikely) the hard roof will protect you sufficiently, and a helmet isn't going to prevent spinal compression injuries from the car crushing you into the ground anyway. In my club, most of the loaner helmets and the helmets the veteran guys wear have the 95 cert and are open face.

Have fun and be safe!!

what are the disadvantages of an open face helmet? I used a pretty nice full helmet and I thought it was a little hot inside and very contricting as far as visibility. are there any safety concerns for open face helmet other than things flying in your face?

Don't listen to this guy. It really sucks when the tech guy says you can't race because you have a motorcycle helmet.
