With mitsu being the way they are about autoxing, I was trying to think of a way for us stock or moderately moded evo's to autox without worrying about getting our warranties voided. Dont kill me on the details yet, cause i just thought of it.
Also, I think mitsu can save some face and show that they really stand behind their "race car" for the street and its reliablity by doing SOMETHING like this.
2-3 days before your autox date, bring your car in to mitsu for them to do a "performance check" if you will. They should go over and make sure that the car is in top performing shape, and that all fluids, parts, etc. are in perfect working order. After they go over your car, and it passes or is brought up to standards, they will then issue a race pass for that event on that date only. The pass should state the date of check, vin number, date of event and that this car has been approved to run this event. Also, this pass should be set up in a way that would make it hard to copy, etc. This performance check would then cover any drivetrain, motor, issues that may pop up during an event. It will not cover brakes, tires, or other wear items. Mitsu would be able to charge X amount of dollars to do this check. Both you and the service rep (or whoever) would have to sign the forms.
After the event, you would then have to take the car back to mitsu, to turn over the race pass to be checked off as having completed the event. (possibly a post event inspection
) If you dont bring your car in for a performance check you are "swimming at your own risk" so to speak and will not be covered if they find out you entered an event. Also if you dont bring back the pass with in one week, of the event.....Well I havent thought of that one yet.
I think this would be great PR for mitsu, in that they would be seen as progressive and that they really stand behind the reliability of the evo. They market this car as a rally car, so let the people have some fun with it, and still cover them if any major thing goes wrong. I am not talking about track days, just autox.
I dont know maybe its a stupid idea, but oh well.
