Evo running at Laguna SCCA this weekend!

This weekend is the SCCA race at laguna seca. there is 47 cars in the group, 18 cars in ITE class, so it will be exciting.
you guys want to really see how the EVO stacks up against, really old cars, not anywhere near the cost of the viper or the EVO, stay tuned for this weekend's race at Laguna. as many have chimed in, its hard to really determine what car is eating who, as there are so many factors, it would take a book to list them. driver, set up, type of car, weights, tires, HP to weight, etc to list a few. No doubt the evo is a spectacular car, and no where is the 4x4 advantage more apparent, that in speed GT with the 4x4 , twin turbo 4.5 liter audi RS6 with 525hp.

This weekend, the SCCA ITE race group will have 1995 M3s, Mustangs, cameros and vets. Interestingly, there will be 2 Porsche 928s and one 911. the porsches are bone stock, with a set of headers and supension/tires, with engines not apart since 1985! (ie original) you talk about the performance of the Viper at $60k, well some of these cars running against the "viper eater" are in the $10 to 20k range complete, ready to race!

Now, make your prediction now, but i tend to think a well driven M3 with mostly stock components from 1995, will have the edge. I certainly will have my hands full with him and ill be driving the 1986 porsche 928. Im sure the Evo will be right in the mix too, but make no mistake, if a well driven viper was out there, in similar prep, he would be beating us by a few seconds! (as would a stock 996 porsche cup car, or gutted and lightened C5 Zo6)

should be an awesome weekend and look forward to some great clean fun.
Look forward to seeing the evo out there is should be a flyer!

Are spectators welcome at the qualifying on Saturday, April 2? On Saturday, I will be driving from SoCal to a SpeedVentures event to be held on Sunday at Sears Point. I might stop by Laguna Seca in the mid-afternoon.

Is there any HPDE on Sat.? I'd like to sneak out for a few laps at Laguna until I get 3 consecutive meatball flags for exceeding the noise limit, and get thrown out.

Yes, come on out. Just found out that a Viper competition coupe and the "eaten" viper will be out there too. hate to say it, but based on a time i saw for the EVO at Laguna in january, 1:46, he wont be eating any snakes on sunday or saturday. (unless he finds about 4 seconds a lap) more than likely, after this weekend, the vipers will be eating all of us!

right now, im lobbying to remove the competition coupe viper from the race, as it is NOT a production tub (chassis) so, it will be a classic rematch of the evo and the viper you saw in November's SCCA event!

we have practice and qualifying at 10:30 and 1:30 on saturday. usually a pretty decent spectator event in itself. heck, there will be 51 cars in our group, 21 in ITE!

you only get 2 sounds and your gone by the way! yes, im worried my old 928 will be a little too loud too! (but im bringing all sorts of home depot gysmos)
and the other 928 and I are driving to the track on our DOTs too!

I'm an ex-BMW guy myself and I can tell you that a well set-up E36 M3 is tough to beat. These cars are SO easy to drive on the limit. They're very well-balanced and very throttle adjustible...so you can just throw them into the corners with absurd entry speeds and carry a ton of momentum through the turns. An H-prepared E36 M3 would be very hard to keep up with in an Evo.

This is true, but we are talking about a M3 3.2 euro set up. althought a Hp car is pretty fast out there, its no match for the power and weight of the M3 with that big engine. (something like 275 at the wheels without many mods)

however, the EVO was a lot of car out there!

WE had an awesome race. I was 2nd on grid, but in the 2nd row due to the comp coupe Viper running exibition for no points. so when the Green dropped, the ITE viper fell asleep, and i had to brake check, then the M3 and the EVO went screaming by me. i caught up in turn 2 and we all went 3 wide through turn 2, 3 and almost 4, where i got behind the EVO and had to chase him for 7 laps or so.
He had awesome power and his corner speed and exit speed was awesome (desent braking too). I was only making up a tenth of a second a lap , so by 7 laps , I was on his bumper, and then he started either shifting at the rev limiter, or had a spark problem as he was starting to fall off. the Bmw passed him and then i passed him and then he battled with another BMW from behind for the rest of his laps . I think he had a problem the was getting worse and worse.
my problem was being too cheap and running used hoosiers on a cold day. my times were 2 seconds slower than usual, and that would have been enough to get the viper, had i been a little wiser.

Anway, have a lot of respect for the EVO. first time ive seen one one the track, besides the white one, and i think he may have been more stock and not quite as fast. Kent was a good driver and learned the track well. seems like he is a quick study. Not bad for only being there at laguna once or twice before!

I was driving the Red 928 porsche, and ended up in 3rd, beating the Black 2001 BMW racer, but gettin beat by johnathan in the red viper and David smith (my nemisis )in the white M3 euro 3.2.

it was a great weekend, and drove the car home (again as i do, 4 race seasons running!!)

Your ran well. That white m3 was a high reving son of a gun. Hard to believe those cars were under the db limit. All you could hear from kent's evo was turbo! Bdking has some video.
