The SoCal Tracks are Willow Springs Int'l Raceway (big track) and Streets of Willow, which are right next to each other in Rosamond, about 18 miles northwest of Lancaster off Hiway 14(near Edwards Air Force Base); California Speedway in Fontana (east of Pomona on I-10) where there is a ROVAL (part of NASCAR oval and infield roadcourse) or just the infield by itself; and Buttonwillow Raceway right off I-5 at Lerdo Hiway (40 miles northwest of Bakersfield).

The best HPDE organizers in SoCal are:

www.speedventures.net
www.redlinetrackevents.com (their website has been up and down today)
www.opentrackracing.com and its alter-ego www.americancarracing.com
www.racerfactory.com

I also recommend the Buttonwillow Performance Driving Clinic www.buttonwillowraceway.com

Stay away from NASA events, because you get very little track time.

The NorCal tracks are Laguna Seca (Mazda Raceway), halfway between Monterey and Salinas on Hiway 68; Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, 90 miles north of Sacramento off I-5; and the Taj Mahal of west coast race tracks SEARS POINT (Infineon Raceway) in Sonoma (wine country, north of S.F.).

The NorCal tracks are generally better and more expensive than the SoCal tracks. NorCal HPDE groups include:

www.trackmasters-racing.com
www.tracquest.com
www.ncracing.org
www.greenflagdriving.com

I have run with every group listed in this and the previous post except ncracing and greenflagdriving, but I have heard good things about those 2 as well.

While I respect Richard's desire for lots of track time, one could also evaluate the whole of the learning experience.

It's often a case of you get what you pay for, so you many want to look for the following things in a sanctioning body (or the two dudes who rented the track for the day):

Safety: Full crew or the track's minimum requirement? Ambulance on site?
Flaggers: Flaggers at every turn, or the minimum required?
Instructors: Are there any? Who are they, have they actually raced?
Resources: Time Trials with Car Classing and Timing and Scoring Computer?
People: Do you want to pit with seasoned racers and open trackers, or the guy who swears Van Halen on the iPod is good for 3 seconds per lap (no kidding, I laughed for days)
Opportunity: Are you working towards a racing license? Not only do you get to race, but an accredited racing license will get you the cheapest track time at any track's open test days.

Sorry to hijack...couldn't let this one go.
