Peterhansel scored his 51st stage win. Now the record holder for that in the Dakar. But it wasn't a happy day since Andy Caldecott a KTM rider died today.

Very sad about Mr.Caldecott, to me the serious Dakar riders are some of the toughest people on the planet and to see one perish is terrible and it happens only too often.
The two mitsus at the front seem to be running away with it. Stepahne Peterhansel is really something in the sandy stuff but this is really the last day with serious sand for abotu 3-4days.
chronohunter, I'm too jealous right now. At 5'8" (and rather wide), I can't ride a ktm. Well, I probably could but when I stop, I have to find a step ladder to rest my foot on.... As for the 916, wish I had the money... AND you have an evo. I wonder what's on your list to buy next. Would be tough to beat that combo.
I've plans to do the dakar also, but it's a sort of thing that I'll need like 6months off work to do at least. I have a number of friends who do cross-country racing around this part of the world including the only bloke who's won the fia Asian Cross country twice. [he was supposed to go with mitsu thailand this year but politics....] and they're really up for it too. Seems to take a lot of cash though... and if i do eventually do it, i will be a homo and do it in a car/truck. I'm hard, but not hard enough... perhaps chuck norris can give me some pointers...

MITSUBISHI CLAIMS HISTORIC 11TH DAKAR RALLY VICTORY AND 6TH CONSECUTIVE WIN
The Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero Evolution crew of Luc Alphand and Gilles Picard today won the Dakar Rally, claiming Mitsubishi’s 11th victory on this legendary event and the team’s sixth consecutive win. This is the first time Alphand, a former World Downhill skiing champion, has won the event. Team-mates Joan ’Nani’ Roma and Henri Magne also finished on the podium, in third position, while defending Dakar champions Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret finished fourth overall for the Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart Team.
Following two fatal accidents, one which occurred yesterday in a village during a competitive section and another today on an assistance road, Event Director Etienne Lavigne has elected to cancel tomorrow’s final leg of the 2006 Dakar Rally. While not involved in the incidents, the Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart Team extends its sincerest condolences to the families involved in these tragedies.
As predicted, today’s stage was a tough one for the navigators but Picard successfully guided Alphand and their Mitsubishi Pajero / Montero Evolution through the dusty tracks to allow the crew to set eighth fastest time and ultimately win the event by 17 minutes and 53 seconds over South African Giniel De Villiers.
Team-mates Joan 'Nani' Roma and Henri Magne, and Stéphane Peterhansel and Jean-Paul Cottret, both had navigational problems today and were only able to set 18th and 14th fastest times respectively. However, the Repsol Mitsubishi Ralliart Team crews claimed third and fourth positions overall on arrival in Dakar this evening.
The Dakar Rally convoy awaits news about proceedings for the final day of the 28th Dakar Rally.
