handbrake assisted turns in autox

Anyone with ACD tried using the handbrake on really tight low speed turns? Seems like a little extra rear brake bias while trailbraking could be useful.

Not only is it slower, but it's actually not allowed either.

If you find that you need to use the hand brake to make the corner, then you have already screwed it up on the corner entry.

You can get it to oversteer without using the handbrake if your suspension is setup accordingly ...

evolved04 - When you tried it, did it feel controllable, or just slide inducing?

ratt_finkel - Not allowed?

chrisw - agreed, it would need to be pre-planned, and only for certain types of corners.

daworstplaya - true, but what I was thinking was a little extra oversteer where you need it (entering tight slow 180s), without adding oversteer where you don't (long slaloms)...

thanks for the input

I thought using the handbrake on the Evo was a definite No-No...

Only on the 03 and 04 models as they have a viscous center diff ...

We do motorkhana here is Australia which sounds like much the same thing as your autocross. I believe there are some differences in our cars but regards handbrake I have been told, similar to the old DCCD system in my sti, the ACD opens the centre diff when you hit the handbrake and then allows it to lock oncxe you release it. I have found handbrake turns to be an excellent way to make time on really tight sharp turns but they can be a very risky hero or zero move. The safe way is always to drive it.

With a bit of practise and the awesome AYC and ACD of the EVO you can get very consistent tight turns and set consistently quicker times than those that fear to give the handbrake a lash. Also nothing looks better than all four wheels on fire drifting through a hairpin turn

Yes, because some idiot will come out there, yank the e-brake at 50mph trying to make a turn and end up flipping his car.
