NASA HPDE ?'s
I will be attending my first NASA HPDE event (NASA Texas) next month at Hallett and I have a couple of questions that hopefully some of you can answer. At first I was worried that I would have to start off as a beginner, but due to my experience level and previous schools I was told that I would be in HPDE 3 because I have so much track time at Hallett. This as well as running in the Advanced/Instructor group with PCA and the BMW club for some time now would allow me to move up. My questions are these.
1. With NASA, how do you go about getting signed off for HPDE 4? My goal is to attain my competition license but by reviewing their rules it looks as if I must be HPDE 4 before I can apply. Do I need to sign up for a mentor so I can have someone to watch me for the weekend. I feel that HPDE 4 is where I belong considering my experience especially on this track, although this being my first event with NASA I can see where they would want me to start out in group 3.
2. Also, would anyone care to share their past NASA Texas experience with me or could you give me any info about previous NASA events you have been to. Just really looking for more info on how the events are run compared to PCA, Apex or other events.
Thanks guys.
jeff

After the morning driver's meeting you will break up into your run groups and have another quick meeting. At that second meeting, tell you group leader you want to be evaluated to move up to HPDE 4 and he should be able to make himself or someone else available to ride along with you and sign you off to move up.
I just started running with NASA this year, and have found it to be a great group with lots of good ideas and a vision for where they are going. There are a few guys on here that dislike NASA, since you can get more track time for similar money with other groups/clubs, but I don't think there's an easier or more clear way to work your way into into wheel to wheel combat.

but i don't, i love going out and doing what i'm doing right now, you find the people running the pace with you and run with them, thats more fun than anything, and no dented fenders or anything else to deal with
The one I went to at Mid-Ohio, you have to be signed off to join 3. If you want to make it to 3, just have an instructor ride with you in 2 or something and they'll sign you off to 3 if you're 'worthy'. That should be all there is to it
