What helmet? (The Merged Helmet Thread)
What helmet?
Hello,
On Saturday the 26th there is an autox in Nassau County sponsored by the BMW club.
I need a helment. They say Snell 95 approved is required. From most helmets I see an Snell 2000 rating. It seems this is a newer rating above the Snell 95.
I don't need a full face helment like you might use for motorcycle racing.
Any suggestions of what kind and where from?
Any thoughts would be appreicated.
Thanks in advance...

You might inquire with the club to see if they have loaner helmets. I went to an AutoX this weekend with the Texas Spokes organization and they had plenty of loaners there.
You can usually buy helmets from places that sell motorcycles or motorcycle gear.

All you need is a min. M95 rating to compete in autox. A min. SA95 for road courses and up (fire protection liner). Bell has M00 open face helmets for $119 +tax in white/black (w/ visor and sunsheild). I bought a full face Bell SR-Pro auto SA00 for $269 +tax (w/ visor and sunsheild). A very light helmet. Simpsons are nice and top of the line but you pay for it.

I borrowed a helmet at the NYR SCCA event on Sunday April 13th also at the same place in Nassau County. This upcoming event as far as I know doesn't have loaners from the ad that I read.
I will stop by a motorcycle shop for fitment of my rather large head but was hoping to buy one online.
Thanks
If you can't find a good deal at the motorcycle shop, try http://www.soloracer.com/gforcehelmets.html They have helmets for $100 (thought they used to have some for $80, oh well). I found mine at a motorcycle shop, though. Was a closeout model for $100, and I've been using it for 4 years now, love it.
The difference between 95 and 2000 is simply what year standards the helmet was tested under. Most helmets produced from 1996-2000 will be M95, and the ones produced after 2000 will be M2000, and Snell will come out with new standards in 2005. It's a way to deter people from using old and unsafe helmets as well as promote new technology (although I see a lot of helmets that just get a new model name and retest each time).

Help! What kind of helmet should I buy and where?
I live in So. Cal and need a helmet for Track days/Drag racing. Where should I go and how much do I need to spend?

Your best bet is to find what spec the sanctioning body (SCCA or whoever) has set up for your class. Up here we basically need a SNELL 90, 95 or newer. They're avail on eBay. . . but then, it's your head man... check the phone book. FWIW most sanctioners WILL NOT let you use a motorcycle helmet; they're designed for only one impact to take the force away from your skull if you fall off your bike.

these things are like wine, there is no difference between a $5 one and a $500 one as long as they have similar ratings. also there is little difference between a motorcycle and a car helmet. the major reason bike car helmets are more expensive is the testing and certification in a fire situation. as for material use, they are pretty much identical.
as for why some cost much more than others, its just a matter of then screwing people and trying to get rich quick.
here is an pretty good yet low cost helmet. a friend of mine just got it. its got current Snell and will pass NHRA tech. comes out to be about $85 shipped.

The cheapies just barely get past those rating certifications where the more expensive helmets may far exceed those. There's also a question of manufacturing consistency that should be taken into consideration. Do you think every single one of those cheapies could pass inspection? Also some helmets are cheaper then others reducing stress to the neck/vertabrai by lowering momentum during impact. IE, lighter helmet. You also have other things to consider. Wear, ventilation, fit, vision.
When it comes to my brains I would suggest investing what you think it's worth. Otherwise you're just dialing 1-800-DARWIN.
"What are the differences between the SA and M standards?
SA Standard was designed for auto racing while M Standard was for motorcycling and other motorsports. There are three major differences between them:
1. SA standard requires flammability test while the M standard does not;
2. SA standard allows narrower visual field than M standard (Some SA helmets may not be street legal);
3. SA standard has rollbar impact test while M standard does not. "

and how exactly did you find that out? you guessing?
that statement sounds like its coming from a BMW driver who thinks the more they pay for their car the faster it will go.

i ordered my helmet from http://www.thebellstore.com and had it next day delivered to me at the race track... best thing to do is order direct from the source.
