After driving by that section of track all day today, I can tell you that the 'jump' is barely uphill at all. The dirt is still visible from where Joey launched the BMW, and it is a VERY small patch of dirt dug out of the grass - much less that I was expecting. I was really figuring I'd see a relatively steep grade there, and that's just not the case. He must have hit it just right to launch the car like that. Maybe I'll try and take a pic tomorrow during the parade laps at lunch time.

according to the commentators of the race (Dorsey Scrader) that was a repair made at the track the week of the race (Dukes of HazzardContractors Inc.)

Kinda thought that Grand Am (Rolex Series) would have penalized the GTO-R for tagging/punting him for no reason They're already riding the fence with Pontiac

Doesn't look very fresh, but then again I didn't even notice it when I was there in April.

Makes sense...it probably did not stand out or appear to be alarming at the time. Just goes to show what seemingly insignificant things can bite you in a high speed scenario like that...

That was Michael Andretti flipping into 'China Beach' if I remember correctly, not his dad.

After looking at the spot again today (several times), if Joey would have been 1 foot to the right, there would have been no incident. The divot he left is only around a foot wide and just to the right of it the ground is perfectly flat.

Amazing! I have spectated at the Runoffs at that corner the last 3 years and it is not unusual for drivers to go off into the grass there, especially on the first lap or two when everyone is cramed in tight and jostling for position. Unbelievable that they put an access road (launching pad) there recently. I'm guessing it will be gone soon.
