My first Auto X

I had no Idea this was going to be this much fun.

This was my first ever event. Did not know what to expect.

I was in the 2 heat. After watching some very capable people drive, I new for a fact no meter what I drove, I could not get even close to those times. Well I was wrong.

My best time of the day was around 45.67 I think. I believe the best time of the day was 42 flat.

I DNF my first run, did not know WTF I was doing and completely missed a section of the track.

The other 4 runs were great. I was able to improve 1 sec every run.

This car is a beast, a forgiving one by the way. I made several big errors, like braking to early, braking too late. Too much gas exiting corners, the list goes on and on.

I did feel some understear, and a lot of overstear provoked by my own fault.

I have some pictures here. I can't wait to do it again.

I competed in my first Auto-X yesterday (apr 26th). It was one hell of a lot of fun! I was very happy with how my OZ performed... Granted I've done a bit of work to the suspension (rims, tires, sway bar, springs).

We raced on a 1/4 mile oval with the cones set up around that to lay out the course. In those turns the back end of the car would start to come loose. I said screw it and just let it do it. Was pretty wild sliding the car around corners. I was super impressed with how much the car could take and manage the the turns needed for slalom and Chicago Boxes. The slalom got me a bit because of how rapid the reflex has to be and i spent too much of my time trying to drive the slalom and not trying to feel the rhythm of the slalom. So yeah it was pretty darn cool. I was running times in the low to mid 47's The best time of the day I think was a 40.2 but the guy clipped a cone or two (which in this competition which isn't SCCA btw... is 2 seconds per cone)

The amazing thing too is I never snapped my stock sway bar perches that everyone keeps talking about with the OZ's and reinforced sway bars.

Overall damn good time. I may have some videos in about a week and my final results/standings too. I'll let you guys know!

Congrats on your first ever event as well Fred! Damn impressive to pick up a second per attempt :-).

lol, hey Fred, I was working on corner 3 when you had that DNF on your first run... we all thought you were coming straight for us when you missed those cones!

You might want to try running a slightly lower air pressure in the rear, although a little bit of sliding is fine depending on the turn, just makes it hard to grab again without LSD. I found that with the front-heavy Lancer, it's good to run 4 psi more in the front than the rear. You want just a tad of oversteer. Try that and let me know how your next race goes.

I race SCCA, and we get 2 seconds per cone here in the CSCC region. But we also have slightly longer courses. Usually about 60 seconds.

I did run about 4 psi lower in the rear than the front. I was also shown by one of the guys I raced with that you can put white shoe polish on your sidewalls and then after a run you can check how much sidewall roll you end up getting. By doing that you can then make sure you only go about 1/8" off the tread and you'll know for sure that you are running the lowest pressure that you can while maintaining proper tread contact. For me on my 17's it was 46 psi in the front and 42 psi in the rear.

Next Race is June 1st... so coming up soon! Should be a lot of fun.

Later.

sounds about right, and yeah that show polish is a good indicator. I'm usually running about 39/43, but that depends on the track surface (last event I was at 30/34 and still sliding on that slurry sealed track). Have fun!

One thing that sucks in the MSCC divisions that I run Auto-X in is that unlike in SCCA you get 2 seconds for every cone that you twist turn or whatever in the slightest. From my understanding, in SCCA you only get fined the time if the cone isn't "mostly" in its setup square. So as soon as you touch a cone in MSCC it costs you... doesn't matter if it stays upright or in the box or anything you are screwed unless it perfectly lines up with its setup box still :-)

Later.

Are you listed as DS? The Evo is classed as AS, just FYI. AutoX is pretty fun, I did my first one a few weeks back. Finished next to last in the whole even cuz I hit so many darn cones. My times before cone penalties were pretty good IMHO. I'll be back at it on the 18th, hopefully with better results.

Glad to hear you had fun, I had fun at my first AutoX too.

sdhotwn is in a non SCCA group, so I don't know how their classifications work compared to SCCA, but the Lancer is HS in SCCA, although I've modded my car into STS and am thinking about just going the extra inch into street prepared.

And yeah, wow that's harsh. in SCCA the cone has to either be knocked over or completely outside of its box. If it is still standing and one corner is still touching the box, you're safe. I must have done that a few times, having heard a nasty thud on one tire and yet no penalty when the results were posted.

Congratulations on your first Auto-X. I had my first one in the Evo last weekend. It was my third overall. My first two were in my wife's (her's now that I have an Evo ) O-Z. Needless to say there is a HUGE difference between the two. I did fairly well for our AS. We only had 4 cars and 5 drivers ('94 Vette was dual driver) in the class. I came in third by .02 seconds. Yeah that is 2 thousandths of a second. Damned moderators on this board think they can drive better than me and cheat me out of a trophy. You know who you are mr. moderator man. j/k. I thik that I missed out on first by .07 seconds. Not sure yet if it was me that was 7 thousandths off or, ahem, that certain moderator who will remain nameless for now. All in all a big blast. My wife and I were in an SCCA Novice Skool on Saturday so we learned a lot (killed the tires though). Yes, I said my wife. She Auto-X's now too, in the O-Z of course. I will probably let her do it in the Evo some day. We'll cross that bridge when we come to it.

EDIT: Just looked at the results. I was off of first by .061 seconds. Oh yeah mr. moderator if you read this you are still listed as a '92 Galant. I am almost embarassed to be beat by a '92 Galant (even though it is a VR4). Good thing I know it was a sunroofless Evo with a more aerodynamic antenna.
