USGP 07 Time
USGP 07 Time
Off from its crazy weekend in Canada, the high-speed traveling roadshow known as Grand Prix has hit the states for its 2007 running of the USGP.
I got to Indy at 6:30 this morning, and here are the results from Day 1:
First up the Indy Pro Series, the "lights" version of IndyCars. I must say these cars look much better on a road course than they do on the oval. More racy, more driving. To me the oval feels too big for these cars.

They slide around a lot:
Ok ok.. on to the big boys.
It's always fun to watch that first session, and see the drivers that work up to speed or down to speed.. Scott Speed and all of the Red Bull drivers it seemed work "down to speed" meaning that they go past the edge, lock up brakes, slide around and over a few laps bring the cars under control.
Some of the "down to speed" guys:

The Ferrari drivers, Hamilton, they seemed to work up to speed, very few mistakes, then a couple light lock-ups or slides, then back under control. It made it a lot harder to try to get the lockup pictures, and I didn't get decent ones.
US Grand Prix, or US Grand Drift? You decide.

And finally, the big one:

Mr. Hamilton made a most impressive save here, it takes a lot to make 20 photographers gasp, but he did it. By the way he is more impressive in person than on TV - have no doubt that he is the real deal. He even waved to the crowd on the warm-down lap in practice.. unheard of.
A friend of mine who has been to all of the USGP events at Indy said, "You know in 20 years, it might be a bigger deal to say "we saw Hamilton in his first season" than it is to have said "we saw Michael Schumacher win his five." He may be right.

Most scary seat in the house? (Other than the cars) It very well may be the front-straight blue flagger, who sits with his/her elbow just a couple feet from the cars at full song. Here you can see an IPS car going by.

Some more cars:

Overall it was a good day at the track, lots of good driving, a bit of excitement, and safe. the weather was good, and there was even a light breeze to keep us cool. Fan turnout was good, and everyone seemed to have a good time.

Great shots as usual Jon! Unfortunately we won't be making the trip up - the first time since they started running at Indy. Looks like great weather is ahead, and I for one appreciate your updates!
Great Pics
I am so jealous... I would love to have been that close to cars and all the action. If the race returns next year, I'm gonna have to go. I went in 03' and sall Schumi triumph in the wet. I need to get back...

Sad that i lived in Indiana for 15 years and never once went....well i was young but still. I will make a point to go next year. How'd you manage to get in with the cars and walk the track and stuff? That the day or week before or something?

Leh probably went in with the Porsche teams, since his team also prepped cars in the race.
I took all of my pictures from $60 general admission spots. (Wait times for said spots might vary)

Leh didn't make the race at Mid-Ohio as he was injured in practice.
He came over a blind hill/corner to find a car stopped sideways in the middle of the track, and hit him at almost full speed. He bruised his lower back, a lung and broke his collar bone. He is expected to be back in the car in a few weeks.
