First Open track day with the EVO

I just got back from the first track day I have ever done in my EVO MR. The car only had 1600 miles on it and preformed great. It was such a learning experince for me. I was driving with many race prep'd miatas and porsches.
The day started off fairly slow for me. I was second to last in my lap times. But by the end of the day I had sealed a first place victory!! I was overjoyed!! and still am! For me to improve so much on my first time has me on cloud nine. I cant wait to go back in a month and do another. The EVO is amazing. I was passing up miatas with cages and R-compounds on the track. The track is very tight so the power advantage wasnt very noticeable and these guys were on their 5th and 6th track days. I still have a lot to learn but the EVO is one amazing car and eveyone was so nice and encouraging! I cant wait to go back.

I dont have any photos because you had to pay for them but just take my word for it, it was GREAT!

Glad you got out on the track, but what do you mean by "sealed a first place victory"? It was your first time on track, so it was just driver trainig (HPDE/PDX), right?

no it was called a high speed touring class. There wasnt really any first or second place podiums or anything it just ran on lap times. There was passing though. I got the fastest lap time and they organized all the times into place finishes. Prob just for fun but still i was pretty happy

Hmm, who organized this? Are you on the west coast? You'd never find this on the east coast, and for good reasons too, I think. Mixing first timers with more experienced drivers, open passing (I assume?), especially with high powered cars, not a good combination. Did you have an instructor? If they do not provide instructors, at least get an experienced driver to sit with you, I find new Evo drivers to be pretty sloppy with their inputs, relying on the insane amount of grip of the stock tires and AWD. Having a knowledgeable person sit with you to point out mistakes can really smooth you out and help you drop those times!

yea for the first few laps they had more experienced drivers go around with you an show you the line, then they had flaggers on every corner to make sure it ran smoothly.

Yeah, the Evo is so easy to learn with as the AWD and grip can cover up so many mistakes. My first few times out I had instructors laughing because they couldn't believe I wasn't upsetting the car. For example, letting out the clutch in mid-corner at higher rpms and not spinning! I've learned since then obviously, but it covers up sooo much - and also can be sooo instantly rewarding if you pick a better line!

Just so your know - Anything timed is excluded from normal insurance!

Was it a redline track event? They put transponders on the cars for about $20 more so you can check/compare times. I did one with them at Beaverun but they mainly run west coast stuff. Passing was on designated straights only though.
