Newbie questions....

ok, I've decided that I would like to enter the world of some road racing. More than likely I will just be doing some HPDE's and events similar.

My worry is the car. I've just gotten done with building a fresh 2.3 motor and changing a good few things on my turbo(HP61, essentially a 35r) setup. The car runs flawlessly and no worries, I just fear its a bit much.

I would intend on running low low boost(18psi or so) and a very weak tune. Try to keep the car in the 370-400whp range. I've got upgraded rotors, pads, and fluid, as well as a few suspension mods(springs, swaybar..)

Am I better off using a different car, or would this be ok to use in beginner HPDE? I'm timid with my aggressiveness, but I don't want to have too much car to play with.

Don't worry...there are always some high horsepower cars in HPDE 1 & 2. It doesn't necessarily mean they get around a racetrack faster than a good driver in a Miata!

You'll have plenty of other things to concentrate on rather than worrying about how much power you have or how fast you'll be going down the straights.

Just have fun, listen to your instructor (hopefully he/she will be good..most are) and come home in on piece. Remember, there is no prize money in HPDE !

read his post.. he said he is worried he has too much power....

a valid concern for a beginner.

dont worry, keep it at 17psi & you'll be fine. Just go and have fun, listen to your instructor & see your flag men.

You can drive whatever you please. However, IMO youve made a big mistake modifying your car that much before doing any events.

Like nills suggested, the basic idea is to not blow your stuff up. So the cooler stuff runs, the better. Turn the boost down, run race gas/mix of race gas, keep an eye on the road and your guages. If you have logging try to do that as well so you can see where your oil, engine, water, knock, egt, afr, etc etc etc sits. THEN start to turn things up as you get faster, and also improve the car's cooling capabilities.

Be smart. Just because you have the power there doesn't mean your right foot has to use it. Drive where you are comfortable and don't worry about people passing you. The nice thing about your car is that if you feel like you can handle more speed all you have to do is stand on it a little more.

Thanx for the input guys! I'm not looking to be the fastest, I don't care if I'm at the back of the pack so long as I'm having fun, after all its not racing, just events.

I was just worried that I might have to much car to learn on, but I will give it a whorl at wastegate pressure and see how she turns out.
