What Weight Oil for the Track?

I'm curious about what weight oil people are using for the track (road course). I've been using 10W40 without problem, but wonder if a 10W50 or 10W60 would be better.

I have been running AMSOIL 10w30 Dominator series with good results. I did a bunch of oil analysis tests as well and posted them up HERE if anyone's interested.

All the reports have come back with flying colors so I've been very happy! I previously ran AMSOIL 10w40 and before that, the stock recommended 5w30 Mobil 1.

do you monitor you oil temps while on the track...?

I've ran AMSOIL 10w30 on a 105+ temp wise day and I never went over 260. Pretty impressive considering the ambient temps... and just recently running the same AMSOIL weight in cooler temps, I never went north of 240....

That AMSOIL stuff is amazing...!

Hey Matt

i dont want to answer for boom29, but he does monitor temps, he did some testing when he was running Mobil 1, he also did when running AMSOIL 10W40 premium, and also now that he is running AMSOIL Racing oil 10W30 he has also logged it.

iam sure he will elaborate, shoot him a pm Nathan is a super great person.

Good job Nate on monitoring your progress. I never did. But i can say that ive been using Redline 20w50 for a few years now and everything seems fine thus far. Ive done 2 seasons of NASAs TT series (2007-2008), 1 season of racing in Super Touring (2009), and who knows how many HPDE/test days. I cant provide any data other than saying my OEM engine has lasted thus far.

Yes, I monitor oil temps. With Redline 10w40, I was at about 250 deg on a 98 deg day (pretty rare for the NW). On cooler days (60 to 80 deg ambient), it runs about 240 deg.

I stopped using Mobil1 10w30 because of very low oil pressure at idle after lapping sessions (even after a cool down lap).

AMSOIL, Redline, bah, I think we'd see similar results with any good quality synthetic oil of the same weight.

Oh I was only commenting on the original poster question Andy...

I know that Nate has done an excellant job on sending out his oil to have it analyzed and got nothing but great results...

Never did any analysis, but I was running Amsoil Dominator 10W-30 in my car for over 20K miles both on the street and the track with only positive things to say for both .

I use the AMSOIL 10-30 Dominator in both my cars. My VQ35 used to have oil consumption problems. I haven't seen any decrease in oil since I made the switch about a year and a half ago. It used to literally chugg Mobil 1. I run it on both cars though all year long with mixed racing and Dailydriving.
