Are different sized tires OK?

I've been throwing around the idea of running 265/35 V700's in the rear and 285/30 V710's in the front to improve front traction and help rotation. All four would be on 18X9.5 wheels.
The problem being that the 285's are about a 1/2 inch shorter than the 265's. Will this put undue wear on the transmission?
Thanks.

Running a staggered tire setup is possible but it has to be in the correct ratio. For example I believe 265/40 are almost the exact same height as 235/45. Most tire manufacturers and dealers like tirerack will have a chart of all of the available sizes of a particular tire, on this chart will be the overall diameters of each size and as long as you get tires with the same diameter there will be no extra wear on the drivetrain. I would however stick to the same exact model of tire since measurements might be different between different tires.

You should be doing this with spring rates, sway bar adjustments, and tire pressures.

Ok, I think we are getting off topic a little now. I am talking about autox only. The car is trailered to events so it's not like I will be on the highway with these.
I'm certainly not going to equalize tire pressures front and rear at autox.

It can be done if you carefully pick your tire's overall diameter/height(a few rev per mile diffrence have not proved to be harmfull on an autocross only car).
A couple of autocrossers have tried it including myself. Daddio, was the first I believe to run staggered succesfully back when 275 was standard on the evo(I believe he ran a 275/245 set up).
Running staggered has it advantages on a front heavy prone to understeer car when used properly, I ran 315/295 for half a season before switching to 315/315 and to be honest I don't think I gained much time from the switch.
