I took the opportunity to go see the World of Outlaws sprint car race on the 1/2 mile high banked dirt oval at Lebanon Valley raceway near Albany NY. It was the most insane performance I ever witnessed! The average speeds were 132mph during practice when the track was fastest. When they went by me before turn 1 they had to be nearly 150mph. Then the top drivers would not lift! I never saw anything like it before. It blew every inch of my brain when I saw the first driver turn into the banking at full song! The motors are 920hp nitro methane injected V8's. The cars weigh 1375lbs with the driver! Go see one of their races this summer! The Lebanon Valley track is the 2cd fastest track they run on because of the high banking. The grueling 80 event series covers the entire country so there is a track near you to see them. To put the speeds I saw into perspective my friend told me about a track in Pennsylvania that is a 1/2 mile paved stock car track. The Busch North cars would do 22 second laps, the Super Modifieds would turn a 18 second lap. On the Lebanon Valley dirt track the winning World of Outlaws sprint car ran a 16.5 second lap! Absolutely the fastest driving you can ever see. I have seen F1, Indy and GTP races. The only cars that gave me that impression I felt at Lebanon was the Toyota GTP monster cars with 1200hp. Most importantly!!! Bring ski gogles, ear plugs and a hooded jacket. You will never see so much dirt being torn up and tossed at you with speeds approaching 100mph! If you are near the fencing and the pack goes by a gale force wind follows them hurling rocks, dirt and gravel which will hurt you!! Just the most entertaining spectacle you can experience! These cars are nothing like the dirt modified cars, they are on a ultimate performance level. Several of the teams are owned by NASCAR drivers which keeps this crazy formula highly funded. Tickets are very reasonable around $25....You have to check these cars out! If you bum out that you can't see Gp B rally cars going crazy speeds you owe it to yourself to see real REAL REAL fast speeds on dirt! The World of Outlaws!

 

Nice write up! I grew up around oval track racing and the outlaws were always some of my favorite to watch, there's really nothing like them.

 

I've always wanted to see outlaws. I've seen the midget race at PRI and that blew my mind but Outlaws are an entirely different story. Definitely would like to go. You gave a great description!

Tonight (7/24/11) is the night to watch the fastest dirt machines on earth on the high banked 1/2 mile dirt track in Lebannon Valley NY. This is the 2cd fastest track they run with speeds approaching 150mph. I will not miss this show! 1000lb cars with 900hp! Don't forget to wear ear and eye protection if you stand near the fence. A gale force wind will pelt you with dirt and rocks! These men are some of the bravest on earth to race these sprint cars. Right up there with Indy cars. As Tony Steward said "I leave this racing for the professionals" Can't say enough I am really exited to see this spectacle again...Hope some of you can see them...

Packed crowd of over 25,000 fans got to see the "Greatest Show On Dirt". The main 25 lap feature had a few cautions flags but the speeds were insane! Not as much passing on this track because the top cars are so fast. Good get well wishes to Joey Saldana who is hospitalized from a earlier race event accident. Rob sorry I did not pm you, I was flat out working all week after racing last weekend at Pocono. They will be back to this part of the country later this year. I would travel to up state NY or PA. to see another race. I normally don,t really enjoy going to a track if I,m not driving but The World of Outlaws are too much fun to watch!
