NASA TT - Two Track Records in Two Weekends!
NASA TT - Two Track Records in Two Weekends!
I have worked my way up through the NASA HPDE ladder over the past two years and finally got signed off for my provisional TT license about a month ago when I ran the NASA event at Grattan here in MI. I ran my first ever NASA TT event last weekend at Autobahn Country Club. It was my first time racing there other than the 3 laps I did when we stopped there for One Lap of America this year. I have to say a huge thank you to Nathan (Boomn29) for walking me through my first TT event like a little kid on his first day of kindergarten, as well as giving me pointers on how to go fast at Autobahn. He should know - he has a more than one NASA Track Record there
Saturday I took the win in TTU with a 1:31.8, second fastest TT time of the day. Unfortunately there were only two of us in TTU, so no Hoosier Tire contingency. For Sunday both of us TTU guys bumped up to TTR so we would have more people to play with and have a chance of winning some tires. After having a day of pracitce on the track I was able to pick up a full second with a 1:30.8 - with was also a new NASA TTR Class Track Record for Autobahn South Course!
Here is a video of the run :

This past weekend NASA paid a visit to the site of the upcoming 2011 NASA Championship Race - Mid Ohio Sports Car Course. I have run here more than anywhere else - about 10 track days in HPDE. This was my first visit in TT, though. There were between 55 and 60 cars in TT this weekend - and I think it was ugliest for the slowest and fastest cars. The fastest cars were catching the slow cars after only 1 hot lap - so pretty much you had ONE LAP to get it done. After that, with traffic it was nearly impossible to go faster. The time difference between the fastest and slowest cars was nearly 30 seconds per lap!!
Saturday I ran street tires the first session out to get used to the track again, then switched over to Hoosier A6's for the rest of the event. I ran TTU on Saturday and took 2nd place to a super fast Corvette who is a TTU track record holder here at MidOhio on the Club course. I had a 1:31.5 and I think he had a 1:30.8. I tried and tried to catch him, but as the day wore on the air temps got hotter and track temps got hotter and the car got slower.
Sunday I jumped up to TTR class again and was able to run a 1:31.8 which was a new NASA TTR Class Track Record for Mid-Ohio Pro Course.
The TTU Pro Course track record of Danny Popp will probably never be beaten, so we won't discuss how insanely fast it is

Ever since I built this car it has been known as "The Showcase Evo", "The Pure Tuning Evo", "The red and black Evo with lots of stickers and a big wing" . . . but I am now going to officially name it. From now on my EVO will be known as the "ONE LAP EVO IX", since I ran One Lap of America and also because in TT it looks like I only get one lap to put in my best time!

Thanks Jeremy! You had your car out this year? How's she running? The surging issue I had last year when you drover the car at Nationals is completely gone now. Switched turbos and massaged the decel map and she's working great!
Great job making the move to full TT!
Guys like you and Nate are a big help for people like me going through the same process (2nd year with NASA in DE3 now) working towards giving TT a try.

I'm glad to see your car is running well. I think i might follow your lead and upgrade to a CBRD turbo for next year.
Mid Ohio video added to initial post.
Thanks Chad! Couldn't have done it without your amazing turbo. Powerband is SO huge I just leave it in 4th gear most of the time on bigger tracks. Love it!!

Great driving Jarrod!Being in that tail end of the classing of cars. I can attest to how crazy it was after 2-3 hot laps. I saw Jarrod and Nate on 2 sessions. Starts were kind of hairy for the end of the train. By the time green dropped for the first cars we were just into Thunderhill. I was not able to get WOT until 12.
I like the name change! I'm assuming that One Lap 2012 is definitely in the cards then!?
Great times at Autobahn South, looks like that will be one of the road courses for 2012 according to Brock and I think we are going to need to shoot for low 1:31x times on street tires to compete with the top 3 cars there. We'll see what Leh Keen is driving next year, maybe he'll handicap himself in a "slower" car and still pull off a win. :P
I wish I was out there racing my Evo X GSR, but sadly a burnt out shell won't pass tech. I hope to be back in action with a newly prepped Evo X MR, we will see if it can be made competitive.
