I don't have that much auto-x experience, but they were the most un-organized from the ones I tried last year (NASA, SCCA, PCA). As a novice, their procedures were hard to follow and there was not much by way of instruction.
I think they have the fastest courses of the bunch though, but that has its downsides. The one time I went they had a crash. One of the founders of the club spun a Dinan M3 into the curb. I think it was totaled.
That said, I would try their events again now that I have a little more events under my belt and give it another shot.
If you are just starting out, I would recommend PCA first, and then NASA. Also the SCCA in long island had a great auto-x school event for $40.

i was there when michael in the blue m3 bit the curb - i was the silver evo in class B - i don't remember another evo in the event - were you in another car or just watching the mayhem? - it was an amazingly fast course! - guess i'll have to watch out for a red evo at the next event - see you out there!
personally, i wouldnt enter any open-run autoxs. my first autox ever was with the m club. i agree that they have the fastest track, i was close to redline in 3rd!! i participated in the last m club event at meadowlands and the parking lot was just a horrendous location for the track. the pavement will destroy your tires and there was water and light posts on the course. plus, there was a cross-over on the track which is suicide when there are novices running behind you. honestly, i was surprise that there was only one accident that day.
