Goodyear Eagle RS AC Compound Initial Review

Goodyear Eagle RS AC Compound Tested – Initial Review

225/45R17 mounted on 17x7 Team Dynamic rims for a 2002 Ford Focus SVT - prepared for NASA Time Trial E class.

July Mid Ohio Pro Course on 225/40R17 Hoosier R6s - 1:51.5x
August Mid Ohio Pro Course on Goodyear AC - 1.50.1x

1.5s with more stored in the tires.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9LP0RBLBYlU
(Rolling start. White and Blue/Gold colored Miatas are a TTD classed cars).

Started Goodyears with a cold psi of 26 front and rear. Hot psi was at 34 front and 33 rear. Tires generate a lot more grip quicker over my R6s. I would imagine the A6s would have more instant grip as well. From talking with the Race Team engineers, the Goodyear ACs like a bit more cold psi. Next event cold psi will be up to 28-30 range.

With the rear sway bar on full stiff, in Keyhole, China Beach, and Carousel, I was lifting the right rear. This made the car squirm late braking into corner entry. Previously with the R6s, I would not get that much front grip to cause the car to tri-pod the rear wheel in hard turns.

Logged g loads with a 1.9 peak and 1.3 constant lateral g loads.

Overall a very consistent feel to the tire. Where there from first lap to end of the session. Even after 5 hot laps they did not go away.

Will update more as I get more time on these tires.

Thanks for the review. Looks like only a handful of people are trying this new tire out. Looks promising. I only heard about it during the Global Time Attack in New Jersey.

Welcome. Yeah, I have not seen anyone in my region running the tire either until a couple of Spec Miatas showed up on them. Harder to find at the moment. I've been told that is going to change soon.

Looking at the MSRP of these tires in comparison to the Hoosiers, not seeing too much price difference. Showing $310 for the Goodyear in 275 35 18s vs $336 for Hoosier A6/R6 in 285 30 18.

Since the times are so close to one another. Do you think it's possibly due to having run the course earlier in the year and being more familiar than just the tire?

Not really. Driven the course previously. In July I was running 1.51.1x-1.51.8x, very consistent.

Car was in same condition. Only change was the tires.

Sounds good. Finally got around to reading my Grassroots Motorsports magazine and they have a Goodyear RS AC vs Hoosier A6 article. haha

Edited to add article.

I think that article is a bit half cooked.

They did not really test them optimally.

Goodyears like more psi and I am sure I can re-align the car to match them more as well.

Another think that annoys me is the stacking without being mounted. Tires are measured mid-sidewall to mid-sidewall on recommended width rims for DOT testing. Staking without rims is a confusing point they attempt to make.

Says they were running 43psi in the fronts and rear on the Goodyear. Seems really high, but haven't had any experience with them.

Yeah, 43 psi doesn't sound right. I was instructed to run a cold psi from 28-30 f/r. Should heat up to 36-38 range for a hot psi.

It wont be long till we find out if the Goodyear can stand up to the Hankook. Prosolo finale and Nationals are just around the corner.

Im really hoping they put some pressure on hoosier to come out with an A7 compound like the H20 came out after kumho W710s started dominating wet events.

Agreed. As the tires get into more hands, we'll start seeing how it does more and more.

Those results just look fishy to me. I know RS-3s (from personal experience) are sticky as hell, but being only .7sec slower than Goodyears while hoosiers are a full second faster just aint right.

I run the Goodyear RC tires on my st2 car. It is hard to believe but the 42psi range seems to be the sweet spot....

And you are right the tires do not give anything up at the finish. I have run my fastest laps in the tail end of the race. My car is getting sorted out at AMS right now, but I hope to bring Goodyear their first National Championship on these tires!!

You'll have to make it through me and my ho-ho's first.

Sike. I think a Mustang or Vette is going to take home the championship in ST-2. I'm still baffled how the Mustangs are so fast being that heavy. Well, I know of one that did well because he listed 275 R6's but ran 315 slicks.
