Launching Autox?
Launching Autox?
I recently took my Evo 8 to an autox event and had a good time, the car actually felt way more at home than I thought it would.
I've noticed in some of the videos from the autox run thread some of the guys are using launch maps to build boost and others are just leaving the line normally. At the event I went to there would have been plenty of advantage in using launch maps.
Being EvoM there is obviously a ton of existing information on setting up launch maps but a lot of this stuff is based on drag strips and is 10 years old... I was wondering if there is a safe-ish setup people have adopted that also hooks well on parking lot surfaces in regards to rpm, boost, etc.
My car is an '05 making around 450whp on a bbk, 6 puck clutch, re71s, 10k/12k ohlins, stock trans/diffs outside of the rear being restacked and solid mounts.

you will break stuff. many of us have. I think the first to go for me was the output shaft. I stopped hard-launching the car but still broke a rear axle and center diff
I do some double launch thing. maybe 50% chance that I'll launch right lol.

A standard autocross (not pro solo) shouldn't actually have a drag race start, so maybe the first step is to talk to the course designers.
As for launching: With a 450whp build, strong clutch, and sticky tires you're at high risk of breaking things if you don't launch exactly right.
The repeatable setup would be a clutch slipper valve ( https://www.magnusmotorsports.com/pr...ontrol-device/ ) and a carefully tuned launch map. Abort the launch if you sense any wheel hop. Start saving up for a T-case rebuild anyway.

I did a full season of autox and I launched the car off the factory launch control on all my 3rd, 4th, and 5th runs. You just gotta know how to feed the clutch. The car takes off like a rocket when you do it right. And it feels so smooth, which is creepy.
it netted me a few TTOD and class wins.
As opposed to people I've seen dumping the clutch, shaking the crap out of the car, and having something go *ping*.

Over the course of 3 evo's, I've never once broken a diff or had trans issues. I'm currently beating the hell (knocking) on wood.
Hundreds upon hundreds of launches. Granted, nothing was really over 400whp...

i launch every race start with sticky slicks and ive never broken anything on a launch. *touch wood* as mentioned earlier its all about having a proper launch control setup done on your ecu and then feeding the clutch in gradually and smoothly. if you drop the clutch things break. you use the clutch pedal to control the wheelspin. less clutch less wheelspin
what matters a lot is the grip on that very pavement. if its not as grippy, like dusty asphalt or some worn concrete, I think it would be easy & safe for an allwheel launch. Sometimes our autox start is on some barely used part of the lot and the concrete still have perfect brush lines... that will be a bad place to do an AW launch

Otherwise, I slip the clutch until I feel the car start to move then release quickly, but not dump. With grip, the car feels like it's floating on air (only way I can think to explain it) and just moves. Feels like a roller coaster.
But, I can see how getting it wrong could destroy a drivetrain.
Whenever I’ve launched my car I have always loaded up the trans with the handbrake and slipped the clutch, when the light goes green the rest is just timing and control.

For me it's opposite. Slippery = wheel spin = possible wheel hop or at least not much reason to launch in the first place. On slick surfaces, I leave like I do from a stop sign.

If I trailered my car then I'll be braver doing AWD launches
I dont think I've ever been in that situation with my evo. no wheel hop or some wheel spin but not going anywhere. Even in the rain I get wheelspin with WOT and still cover a lot of ground. Maybe your in-side threads are worn
