Ultimate Budget Track Wheel Setup

This morning I decided to play mad scientist with my roommates R58 OEM Cobra R wheels. They're 17x9's and currently shod with 255/40/17 V700's. It worked, it does not rub, it has massive amounts of brake clearance. If you dont care about sacrelige and just want some wheels that work and can carry a wider tire, then this is the perfect setup. Here's some pics from this morning.

Didn't realise the Mustang uses the same bolt pattern. Hmmm, this opens up a whole new world of possibilities...

[edit] I should add that these wheels are $150 each from gefracing.com.

No offset there, but it states weight @ 33lbs. I know for a fact that these wheels don't weigh 33lbs each though.

[edit] According to TireRack they are 22.5 lbs with an offset of +30mm.

just make sure you're getting the R58 model Cobra R and not the R179

Wow, I always assumed that RWD cars had a zero offset still. Goes to show you shouldn't assume. Nice discovery, this would make a very good economical and useful track setup.

+35 is the perfect offset for a 9" wheel I think these will hit on most lowered cars (they would on mine) But looks like a great wheel and the price is outstanding!

I hope this will allow more people to be able to get out onto the track.

I would suggest figuring out some sort of mudflap setup if you care about your paint... or your face, while doing full-lock testing I managed to get a rock flug up into my face. No damage, it'll buff out. >=)

Me thinks the chickens who are sceered of the track need more than a second set of wheels and tires to shut up their excuses..

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but did anybody go out and buy these wheels? If so anyone with a lowered car have any luck with them?

I'm finding out that the only way I'll ever be able to afford tracking my car is to get another set of wheels, and these look real promising.

Also anyone know if the 2000 Cobra R wheel part #M1007R189 will fit? Thanks in advance.

The Cobra has pretty big brakes so I see no reason why it shouldn't fit. Of course, don't take my word for it. However, if memory serves me right that is a 9.5" wheel which is gonna be pushing it somewhat and your wheels/tyres will stick out considerably.

[edit] Third edit . Maybe I should do the actual research before I post . It looks like those Cobra Rs are 24 backspacing. I'm no expert on wheels but I'm pretty sure they won't actually fit . But, Discount Tire sells some cheap 18 X 9s too made by MB Motorsports and they're $176 each http://www.discounttire.com/dtc/find...INT&vid=008389. No mention of weight though.

Yes it is 9.5", I just like the way it looks so much more. I was thinking of buying another set of stock wheels when I came across this thread.

What would you do? A set of R58's for track events, or buy another set of stockers. I like the idea of more rubber being avaliable, but I think they sorta look like hell too. That being said I've only done one Driving Education event at MotorSport ranch, but had so much fun it's all I think about anymore. I just want to figure out a way to make this a little easier on the pocket book is all. Thanks, John

Hmmm, I like the look of those alot. Only thing is if I bought them I would want to run them on the street they look so nice. At my skill level I doubt I would notice much improvment, so that would leave me using the stock wheels for the track which already have RA-1's on them.

Can you see why I'm having such a hard time with this?
