255 NT01 vs 245 slick.
Opinions on a 255 NT01 vs 245 BFG R1, Toyo RR, Hankook Z214.
Aaaand go. |
What's the basis for this comparo? The slicks will blow an NT01 out of the water. |

Compound always trumps size as long as the size diff is less than 50-60mm |
hankook z214 isnt a slick - its an r comp. also what compount? c51, c71, or c91?
the difference from a tw200 street tire to an r comp is about the difference from an r comp to a proper slick but to answer your question a hankook will be much fast than an nt01. but it will heat cycle out in autox before it wears out of your could cord it in a long track day. |
I need to get my eyes checked. For some reason I thought he had Pirelli slicks on that list. But yes an r comp will still be faster.
Last I checked the z214 isn't being produced anymore. It was the tire I wanted to run for TA this year. |
It only starts to get interesting to me when you do realistic comparisons. For instance a 315 A7 vs a 245 Michelin S8L slick. Like he said if it's only a 10 mm difference you'll be wasting your time on 200tw tires if lap times is your goal. Esp since most of the 245 R compound DOT tires are already 255 in reality. Then you'd dive into purpose: 1-2 lap flyer vs 45 minute race vs AX vs OneLap. All have their own strategy to consider.
But your talking about the GL rules or? |

Says "medium". My HPDE = 80mins, so maybe a couple events before they cord?
I don't think I'd autox with them, though. we dug a set of pirelli SLICKS out of the trash last summer .... they are out of this world. need to get up to heat but you can PUSH them for 20 minutes and they dont get greasy. a7's get greasy after a few laps but they cost $2400 a set and are good for 6 heat cycles ... |

medium is c71. theyre good but you'll be slower than an a7. the c91 are AMAZING but they're good for a weekend.

I wasn't really trying to compare other tires ,though. I have NT01s and wondering if the Hankook would be much better. |
Yes. You would want R7 for HPDE or long races. A7 for AX or time attack. I have an old set of C91 Z214s I'm using for practice tires this year and I'm excited to see how they feel. |

Why are you even wasting time on a 245? Is it rules related? Its been well proven with the latest tires wider = faster for a given compound.

My buddy is running Rcomps on his Atom in an attempt to beat me, I'd like to show up on some too, for LOLs. |
If it was just about having fun, honestly Id show up on 285 RE71s over a 245 Hankook. The kook might be faster 1-2 times, but they fall off pretty fast and the RE71 is going to be fun till the cords. Not cheaper in the initial buy in but cheaper after the 2nd set of "cheap" r-comps

1. I'm still on 17" wheels, so 255 is my widest option. 2. They cost as much as the Hancooks and far more than the Toyos. 3. I'm not sure I'd be able to keep up with the Atom on R comps. Once I'm done having fun, I have my NT01s to put back on. |
For HPDE, NT01 is a good choice because they wear well and are inexpensive, especially in 17” size. I would expect RE71Rs to wear faster and be a little quicker than the NT01s despite the treadwear ratings. |
If the NT01 wears anything like the RC1 which I've heard it does it will long outlast an RE71 on a track
|
I only ran my 265 RE-71Rs on track once. They wore much faster than I expected.
How does the RC1 grip relative to the NT01? I don't see the Maxxis discussed as much as I would have expected. |

I was actually gonna start a new thread on what everyone thought on 100tw's because the .5 bump nasa is giving makes for a heck of a case. Here's what I imagine is the ranking:
1. Goodyear Supercar 3R 2. Michelin sport cup 2 3. Shaved Toyo RC1 4. Maxxis RC1 5. Nitto NT01 But there's some new players. Federal has this FZ-201? And Michelin just came out with a sport comp 2R? |

And Michelin just came out with a sport comp 2R? - Haven't seen much on the SC2 but Mich stuff tends to be fairly pricey. - Toyo RC1? - I like my RC1, a good tire for the price but certainly not the be all end all. Mine are quite old, I need to check the date stamp but it's at least a few years. - NT01 has good size selection and good prices but quite long in the tooth and doesn't offer ultimate grip but does handle heat well. - FZ201 is actually a couple years old, sizing is pretty crap if you're looking for wide and have pretty much no data in the US. I think the AR1 is going to be the new hotness for 100tw honestly. Their size selection is awesome and they seem to perform quite well based off what I've seen so far and price is pretty damn stellar. I was told ~$280/ea for 315/30/18. Little tip for anyone interested, the AR1 will not be available through any tire retailers. It's being marketed as a motorsport tire and will only be available through motosport shops. |
Pilot Sport Cup 2 is 180 TW, there is a new variant being tested now, Pilot Sport Cup 2R

Sorry, missed an R. They will be available only at motorsport shops. |
