KevinD tunes Boostez's EVO8!

All:

So to recap on the previous evo dyno day at COBB, my evo8 put down 345whp/342wtq. This was on an older 91octane tune from TT in LA. Boost peaked at 26psi.

Mods:

100% Meth
TBE with stock O2
AMS LICP
Megan Headers
K&N dropin filter with stock airbox
Manual boost controller.

Everything else is stock.

Kevin wanted to do a little magic to see what would happen with a little more boost and a retune on 93octane. Our goal was to keep everything pretty much the same and see if the car could put out more hp.

Without doing anything to the car, Kevin wanted a baseline on his application dyno through his laptop. I'm very leery of these kinds of tools for dyno numbers, but I was curious as to how far off it would be from the real dyno number. I was amazed to find that the first pull indicated 348whp and 327wtq. The first pull had significant backfire as the boost was blowing out the spark.

We took the car back to the shop, removed the Hallman manual boost controller, regapped the plugs, threw on his 3-port boost solenoid, and installed a FORGE BOV to hold the boost during spikes.

After a series of pulls and tuning we came back to the shop with 367whp/381wtq with boost spiking to 32psi.

Today I immediately went to COBB to see how close the road tune was compared to the real dyno. Results are so close to the road tune, it's uncanny!

367whp/386wtq with boost spike to 29psi. All 3 pulls were consistent to within 1-2whp/wtq from each other.

I now must bite my tongue and give Kevin props for proving me wrong. I thought for certain that I would not get much more whp from raising the boost so high but getting 22whp/45wtq from just raising the boost, I'm astounded to say the least!

I am ever closer to catching Mackie's 400whp EVO9 for the stock turbo record with plenty of options left for modding!

Thanks Kevin!!

His skills at tuning were never in question. In fact, it was a question of whether the "car" would yield more whp. Going from 26psi spike to 32psi spike yielded a mere 22whp increase. The heat does factor into it. I just thought it would factor in more.

turning up boost will always give you more power....but at a certain point the power gains begin to drop off.

I know this. I was betting that the evo's stock turbo put out nothing but inefficient hot air past 25psi to the point that no more power could be made from it. I was wrong. Point taken. There definitely isn't any more power to come from it by turning it up now.. So about 30psi is the max on the stock turbo.

Even my runs the boost tapered off fast to 22psi to redline.

great results, definately one of the strongest 8's ive tuned. i'm interested to know how much methanol flow rate your getting though. might make me want to increase flow rates on other kits locally as the timing curve was considerably more aggressive then when we typically run.
