OEM Pads Check

I was getting ridiculous squeal from the stock pads and figured with 21k miles on them they were about dead. I put my new floor jack and jack stands to work and put in the ET500s (which was much easier than I expected it to be as I had never changed pads on anything before) but thought that my stock pads didn't look that bad?? To me they look about half worn? I could be totally wrong and they could be completely dead.

What do you guys think. Crappy iphone pics.

Not junk, but definitely worn. Keep them as your toolbox as spares just in case you or someone else ever needs them in a pinch.

You guys think I could get a track day out of them, like the Apex or the Drivers Edge weekend?? I know the ET500s are no bueno for the track.

Med performance street tires I think you would be fine. Just change the fluid to something like the endless or motul. If you are running nt05's or star specs you may kill the pads.

My saying is the two most important things on the car are brakes and tires. Try not to skimp on either as they are what is keeping your car on the road.

if you have never been to the track before, they will be fine even with very sticky tires. i doubt you'll push the car hard enough the first time out to kill that much pad. with some practice though and they would definitely disappear fast (but at that point you'll be looking for better pads anyway).

Sounds good guys. Thanks for the info. It will be my first time to the track, so that is good news that I can use them. I'll order some Motul or Endless this weekend.

make sure that you bring the et500s and tools to the track with you just in case they do disappear faster than expected. When and where are you going to the track?

We are hoping to do either Apex or DE around March or April at MSR if they have classes during those months. I'm going to try and get in a few autox in around march, but i think the 500s will hold up for autox from what I've read.

yeah, you could run either pad for autocross for sure. the runs are to short and speeds arent that high to generate the intense temperates that break apart the pads quickly. for the brake fluid ,although the tech inspection requires you to have flushed the fluid semi-recently, you don't need the ultra expensive fluid because as long as its not contaminated, you wont ever boil it over.

Just a word of advice, Don Herring will be hosting another NTEC track day out at MSR this April or May, so you might want to get out to Apex/DE before that event so that you can have some experience on the track.

ET500s are only rated to 1000F. With for DD and AX is more than enough.

For track duty, I would at least look into a track only front pad set.

You referring to AutoX or track?

AutoX: I agree
Track: brake fluid is the first thing I say you spend some $$ on. SRF? No. Something better than OEM: hell yes. Heavy car like the X = roasted pads and fluid (right Richard )

That is the plan for sure. So far Apex hasn't posted anything for 2011 on their site, and DE only has a a Feb event. Hopefully they have one before the Don Herring track day.

So maybe the plan should be (both cars running stock wheels and Advans)
Track: fluids for both cars, track pads up front for both cars, OEM pads in the rears.

Autox: fluids for both cars, ET500s on the GSR, OEM pads all around on the SE
