SSTF in the rear diff?

I'm posting this in the local section since this may just pertain to the local dealership (Don Herring Irving).

I purchased fluids to do the 30k service myself. My understanding is that transfer oil is DiaQueen LSD, the rear diff gear oil is DiaQueen LSD and the rear diff torque transfer oil is ATF SP III, but the guy at the parts counter swore that he always uses SSTF for the rear diff gear oil in the MR and wanted to sell me what looked like a gallon of the stuff. This made no sense to me so I went home to confirm that it was LSD in the service manual and just bought another quart of LSD oil.

Has anyone else heard this before?

Diaqueen 90W LSD fluid is sold by the 4L can and is what is required for the rear differential in addition to the Diamond ATF SP3.

I bought mine by the quart at about $15/ea. Only need <1qt for each part (transfer and rear diff gear).

I HIGHLY suggest you do it sooner rather than later; at 29k miles your stock paper filter is going to be very full of particulate and the fluid will be starting to get very sludgy, especially if you drive the car like it was meant to be driven. Those are very expensive transmissions to repair/replace, frequent maintenance is far cheaper and will help it remain very reliable.

I'll keep that in mind. Until recently the car was my wife's daily driver and never raced. I sent engine oil 2 oil changes ago to blackstone and it came back pristine. Now she has a new daily driver and once work settles down I'd like to autox/track it along with my turbo G35.

I second the recommendation for more-frequent SST filter changes. I spent a lot of time trying to track down a filter-only replacement item- the part # in the system includes both the filter and casing, and runs ~$125- but wasn't able to locate the appropriate part # during the time I owned my SST.

SSP sells a replacement paper filter cartridge for $34.99.

Skip the "reusable" stainless steel mesh filters; they don't filter as well as you need access to a parts washer to clean them.

The gallon containers have been discontinued actually. It can only be purchased by the qt now which makes sense for most but is a pain for me. Lol

Those SST filters should be changed every 15k miles...with easy driving.. 7500 hard driving. This ensures long long life and trouble free operation. I changed my fluid every two filter changes

Alright, you guys convinced me. Is there a good source for the SSTF or do you just buy local from the dealer?
