And before anyone starts flaming me for saying octane is a value and not an additive.. It is just the generic name of any group of additives used..

So is this 100 percent that we wont have anymore 93 octane in the future ??? Or only some gas station will provide 93 ??

Not certain.. Its possible that other refineries will offer gas with higher octane for our region.. but for the time being, we'll be getting gas from the same refineries that Cali gets. And even that isn't 100% certain.. Its just not encouraging at the moment.

Yup.. Been to that one frequently recently.. 100 octane is the only Unleaded blend..

I got one better for ya, I live right near republic airport and the Air Power museum.. I fill up the Malibu on the Sunoco Piston plane fuel that they use.. Costs me a fortune so I don't do it frequently.

My point was that 100 octane is $4 a gallon.. Very expensive to fill up twice a week on plus its out of the way. I think that sunoco you're talking about sells Cam2 (if its the one in Nassau County) since I don't recall seeing any gas station selling the race or plane blends of sunoco.

It sucks that Sunoco did away with the 94 octane. On my way to English town sunday I filled up with the 93 and added an octane booster. Car ran real well.

So this is just Long Island or the entire northeast? This sucks as I just applied for the Sunoco Mastercard, which gives you 4% off all gas purchases.

I thought I heard that Europe has much higher octane gasoline available at the pump?

Ya know.. I'm not really sure.. I know it probably will be all of New York.. Possibly Connecticut.. Not sure who else.

And FWIW, their eurpean/japanese octane rating is calculated differently.. 98RON is roughly equivelant to 94 octane here.. (I think, its more or less similar grades to what we have here though)

I thought some environmental groups say enthanol is actually more polluting. Certainly, if more fields are used to grow corn, its not good for wildlife, etc. I also thought I heard it does not yield as much power, but I could be wrong. One thing for sure, its a huge thing for farmers and is a pretty big give-away to the farm states.

Doesn't this happen every winter ???
Most stations get the lower octanes because of the weather ...

I bet the 94 will be back in the spring...

I think your right about the amount of energy.. That is it takes more alcohol to produce the same output as gasoline.. The air fuel ratio is also different, which is why flex fuel vehicles are flex fuel (They adapt).. In a normally aspirated engine its a concern because your at themercy of the atmosphere controlling how much air-fuel you can get in, you can however raise compression significantly, since you need a bit more energy to vaporize alcohol, increasing compression would help generate the heat.

There are a few good things about ethanol.. the most obvious one is you can run higher compression (or higher boost) without detonation, unfortunately you have to do that to regain some of the lost power anyway.

I'm not so sure that alcohol is "polluting" When burned its byproducts are basically CO2 and Water.. Very few other pollutants come out (Obviously there can be other contributing factors that I'm unaware of)

Alcohol can be invisible when it burns, which can be very dangerous especially in a motor vehicle..

I'm personally a huge proponent of using alcohol, and I'd really like to see my car run on 100% alcohol if I knew it were possible (and it were easier to get at Ethanol or Methanol)

There's no question that you have to think a little differently when you decide to run an alternative fuel since tuning is a little different.

I don't know how bad it would be to grow products used to create alcohol products, You have vegetable waste and other things that can be used to make Ethanol, and wood product waste which can be used for Methanol. All of these things are renewable resources and over time, can be produced regionally and cheaply. A huge threat to the Oil companies which is why you are only beginning to see blends of gas with alcohol, even hybrid cars and alternative fuel cars progress is stymied by lobbying on behalf of the Oil industry.

Yes and no... When the weather got cooler, we would get a different blend of fuel (generally the same octane rating) that is supposed to produce less emissions at colder temps.. not to mention a few other properties.. The change is the MTBE additive used in our fuels (both summer and winter) is going to be (or already is) banned and we have a period of time to comply (which they waited to the last minute to comply) For most people who use gas, they use 87-89 octane.. Octane is really not all that relevent to most cars on the road since their designed to run on regular unleaded gas and will run ok.. Its the high performance cars that have an issue.

For anyone who's interested... Like I said, if I could "Fill up" on alcohol easily, I'd definitely consider it.
