How to kill an FPBlack

I just managed to blow up my fpblack!

Sunday I swapped in a new external dump O2 housing; expecting boost changes, I backed off the boost controller 4 whole turns and went for a test drive!

whoo-boy! At about 70% throttle and 4600 rpm in 3rd, it took way less than a second to spike to 43 (or higher) psi, kind of impressive really. This turbo spent lots of time up in the 38ish range, so I’ll bet it actually spiked a lot higher than the 44psi my 4bar could measure.

Unfortunately, the turbo is now scrap metal! The shaft is seized, the compressor wheel hit the housing and its dumping LOTS of oil straight into the exhaust! Just before this happened as I had it apart during the O2 housing install, I checked out the shaft play, and it was as next to perfect as a journal bearing turbo gets.

The engine seems to run and idle fine (other than the smoke cloud), and no extra coolant showed up in my overflow bottle so I 'think' the engine is not hurt.

Thanks to Myles at ER I now have a brand spanking new BB FPBlack being drop shipped to my house. I should get it next week.

Tell us the truth, John. You did it on purpose to have an excuse to get a BB FB black.

Just the O2 housing could cause such a change in boost pressure? Doesn't seem right?

Sounds like a good story, but I'm not crazie enough to totally destroy a turbo I could have gotten $1200 bucks out of.

Then again, I did have one of the very first FPBlacks on the west coast.

This is the housing I used so it wasn't 'just' an O2 housing:

In any event, it was a pretty serious Homer moment!

I think youre doing it all right with that external wg O2. I love that piece.

Looks like there will be three "first ones with bb blacks" in the nw. Daniel (yahu), yourself, and possibly Daniel (dscevo)

Well who wouldn't wanna have a 10 second auto DSM in their garage? Oh wait, different topic.

Looking forward to the results which should be nice given the cooler weather coming.

I thought I had the first Black in the NW; two actually if I count the one I had through Buschur. I also had the first recorded Black failure, and I had my BBB ordered last week, biatch!

You did beat me to the 2.4L though, Johnny!
