New Evo VIII owner

Hi all! I just bought a 2003 WW GSR. 71k miles. I wasn't actually looking to buy a car, but I got a deal that was too hard to pass on. I used to own a 2002 WRX, working on making a S202 clone.. I impulsively traded it in on a GTI years ago. Saturday, I was able to go back to 4 doors, and 4 wheels drive. I'm looking forward to winter for once.

I was told by the dealer that the original owner was from Monroe, WA and had some decent work done to it. Apparently it has a Shepherd transmission, but I don't know to what degree, and an upgraded clutch. So far, I'm liking it a lot. I don't know much about these, but so far I've learned a lot of noises are normal.

If any one knows anything about the car, hopefully good things, I'd be interested to know. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to being a part of the community. It's surprisingly more welcoming than I expected.

welcome aboard! BTW - forgot to answer your question about decel chatter. It sounds like you have an aftermarket clutch and depending to what degree, decel chatter is expected. I have an Exedy triple and that thing chatters quite a bit @ decel.

Yeah, the dealer said it had been upgraded. I asked them if they could ask the PO just to confirm. They did, but apparently he was on his way out of town. I guess I won't know for a little while.

It doesn't grind or slip. So.. I guess that's good?? Haha

Welcome! And the clutch noise is normal, if it's a twin or triple.

Beautiful car, might not be the world's worst idea to schedule a post purchase inspection from another Mitsu dealer, or even English Racing. That will give you an idea on any/all things you'll want to check out in the future. Might also be good to get the 60k service if it hasn't had it already...

That's a good idea! I'll call English today. After putting money down, I am only a little strapped. So, hopefully it doesn't bite me in the wallet too hard.

Normally I wouldn't expect it to cost more than $200

Is there any tell tale signs of if a 60k had been done? Anything visible on top that may have changed, or maybe the writing on the timing belt may be different? Or maybe little to no wear on the belt? <shrug> haha

Also, English racing is super far from me. That trip may be reserved for a later tune. :l

Your best bet would be to have the dealer run a VIN report or Carfax. Visually, it is tough to determine beyond a reasonable doubt...
