Question Dip Stick Accuracy?

How accurate is the dipstick on the Evo (06-MR)? I just had an oil and filter change done today and the shop installed 5 quarts of Mobil 1. The owner’s manual says that the pan is 4.8 quarts and the filter capacity is .32 quarts. The 5 quart fill should be good, but the dip stick shows a good .25 inch above the top fill mark. Which is correct? Thanks!

assuming no changes have been made to affect this, the dipstick should be good. Depending on when you checked your oil, there could be more oil in the rest of the system, such as the cooler, etc. Also, even if a shop didn't use a full 5 qt, they might charge you for 5 gt. Did they fill the oil filter before installing as well? Some various variables, but I've always gone well off my dipstick.

Put 4 in and then check and fill to line. I think two things are causing you to second guess. 1) The amount of oil left in the engine after drain. This can be effected by the oil cooler and possibly the drain angle if you are in a driveway. 2) The orientation of the car when you are checking, is it flat or at a slight incline (again the driveway or sloped garage thing).

Check often.

Take care

When you're engine is totally cold, all of your oil won't leak down to the drain hole. There's pockets and traps that are not being accounted for in your fill. The bearing journals won't all run dry. Even the pan will trap some as the hole is cut into the side of the pan, leaving a slight lip. You also have an oil cooler and lines that won't drain completely.

4+1/4 to 1/2 a qt with a filter change is about all I get as well.

I let the car drain for awhile when I do a change cause I'm usually doing other maintenance things (car is always warm). I put in around 4.5 qts. I'm surprised people are getting 5 full qts without going over the full line...

Dip stick accuracy goes down the crapper when you bend it to try and make it fit with the Magnus V5. I had to basically mark the new Full line on the dipstick which is now in the middle, at least on mine. If no changes were made to it, it should be displaying correctly.

^ This

I drain after I let the car warm up. Then let it drain for a long time while I do other things.

If you want an easy way to know where to stop filling your oil, do this. First make sure you are on level ground and are using a new filter. Pour 4 quarts in, and on the 5th pour in little bits at a time and wait to check. When you hit exactly where you want, MARK THAT SPOT on the oil container. Then you will know where to stop in the future without having to check.

I do this every time I change my girl's IX or my 8's oil. Works like a charm!!

And nobody mentioned the sage advice of "put in 4 qts, then let the car idle for a minute, THEN check the fill level"?

And letting it drain for an extended period is not as beneficial as it sounds at first, the oil cooler will hold about .8-1 qts that wont drain very easily unless you are disconnecting the cooler to drain.

Lastly: the differrence between the "low" and "full" marks on a dip stick is 1 quart. There ya go, now you know...... (rocket surgery)

Per Amsoil's site:

CAPACITIES:
Engine, with filter..........5.7 quarts [1]
Cooling System, Initial Fill..........6.4 quarts
AMSOIL Antifreeze and Engine Coolant
Manual Transmission, W5M51 (5-SPD)..........4.7 pints
Manual Transmission, W6MAA (6-SPD)..........6 pints
Differential, Rear..........1.1 pints
Transfer Case, ..........1.3 pints

[1] Capacity includes oil cooler.

TORQUES: Oil Drain Plug.....26-32 ft/lbs
Manual Transmission
Fill Plug 22-25 ft/lbs
Drain Plug 22-25 ft/lbs
