2015 RVR noise issue...

I’m starting to hear a “whistling” noise from the engine section when the RVR is sitting idle in the drive position. It’s almost like it sounds like some belts are rubbing or something.

I’ll give you some examples below:

Car is in Drive, full brakes applied, I hear the noise.

Car is in Neutral. full brakes applied, no noise.
Car is in Park, no noise.

I notice it more if I’m waiting in a drive though for a coffee etc. This make sense as I’m near a wall and the sound is reflecting off of the wall.

I’m due for me 12K service so I will bring it up for sure, but I’m wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Hmm...
Wondering if that has anything related to this recall? >

Even though your vehicle is a '15..

Keep up posted on what the dealer say on it.

Without hearing the noise . I'd say it is in the CVT , might be the belt inside slipping when the trans is in drive and brakes fully applied . I don't know the CVT system in our Mitsubishi's . To say for sure that's it .
I'll try to listen to mine a little closer in the next few days and see if it does it too .

Newbie question, but we have an actual dipstick for the CVT level?

O.k, I had some help at lunch and I was able to do some investigating.

The sound seems to be coming from behind the engine. Basically that pipe section that goes from the back of the engine under the car. (no idea what it's called )

It does obviously rattle a bit when the car is in drive and it seems like where it is connected is the source of the noise.

I took a video of it so I will show the dealer when I go in for service. It's really noticeable if you stick your head under the front of the car so I think it may be some friction of parts rubbing together.

If that's the case.. then it's likely it's the heatshield has worked itself loose (or it wasn't torqued down to spec at the factory) either way, I'd look at that first.

> That thin waffle looking aluminum piece. (It could be loose and rubbing against the rubber hoses behind it.)

PS:
There's no belts or spinning pulleys/etc. located back behind the engine and firewall.

be careful, steam can penetrate electrical connectors, cause corrosion in them, and a lot of grief down the road ....

That's why I use the handheld steamer, instead of the industrial "torch" units.
Also, as you can see I like to stand back away from the plastics by several inches. (Not like some fools who have it just an inch away from the surfaces.)

By the way, steam is way less likely to weaken those seals (to begin with) in connector(s) than some of the chemicals/"dressings" people like to use. Which leads to moisture and other crap from seeping into the metal contacts of said connector(s).

It's not the heat shield as I checked that and the noise was still there even when I was holding it in various places.

I have an appt this Thursday so I will update after I get it back.

I'm hoping I don't hear the typical "oh, that's normal for that car" routine.

check the catalytic converter heatshield and other heatshields on the exhaust.

i threw some big band clamps around the rattling heatshields on my Evo, but your new OS needs to go back to the dealer. you can check by touching them with a long screwdriver under the car - you could probably even get your hands on them given the OS's ground clearance. see if any are loose - they may just need tightened, as i doubt the bolts are rusted away like mine were since you have a 2015. could save you a trip to the dealer ....

Got the RVR in for service.

I showed the tech the noise that I was hearing and he said it was normal due to the engine vibration etc. I had them re-check and lube the joints to be sure and the RVR sounds better now.

I also had my 12K service done with tire rotation and an oil change. Funny thing the alignment was off again but this time it was the rear right tire that was out.

All in all I'm happy. This dealership has been good to me so far, especially since I have free service for the 1st year.
