yeah, I am one of those. I suspect that for me it's the transmission noise, and at 100k miles I am due for a tranny rebuild according to the service manual. Another cause might also be my lightweight flywheel causing problems. I hope to have all this done before the year is out (and before I need to smog the car)
I might try to play with the knock sensor filters, but at this point with tephra's CEL knock light, it's not a huge priority.

Well I think I've completely recreated my -08 ROM into a -15 ROM. I'll upload it tomorrow. I did notice a significant difference between the Knock Sensor Filter #1
Here's to hoping all goes well.

I did the same thing and also got rid of the partial throttle 5th gear knock at cruise. Now I get it at idle I've found bumping the timing at idle helps a lot, but it will sometimes throw the code at idle with the AC on. YMMV.

First it is great seeing some of the old school members in here. WHAT'S UP DUDE?
I'd like to know if anyone who has done the 0008 to 0015 still gets the steady state p0300 during steady fifth gear cruising. I have one more day under my belt (~160 miles of driving since the mod) and still no p0300. Before this mod, I'd get it every day.
Also, I like to thank tephra for the knock CEL. It has made it incredibly easy to discern randon knock that I needn't concern myself with with consistent problems that occur regularly. Sometimes, when looking at long rambling logs, you don't get a clear mental picture of what exact driving condition causes the knock.
For example, I now know that the fairly regular knock between 2700 and 3400 rpms is only in first and second gear is ALWAYS during soft acceleration (pulling away from stop signs and signals). I have been working on this issue for a while, but can't seem to get rid of it. I've already pulled a lot of timing in the middle area of my map. But I'm gonna need to try other approaches or just live with it.... The CEL knock light has really helped identify the "situation" where it occurs. Of course I'm also always keeping an eye on the light during WOT pulls too.

No P0300 here though I never really got them with the 0008 ROM. The only time I would see the code was during idleing and low RPM low load. This was due to increased timing in those cells to try and help the cams a bit.
Ive since backed it off and havent gotten the code in 6k+ now

Again, interesting. One thing I did notice in playing with the 015 xml in prep to load the 015 ROM is that the xml Table Names don;t always match the instructions that go along with it.
That is to say, reading the direct boost and JDMMAP instructions (for example) for the 008 ROM instruct you to change "Blah blah blah" line from XXXX to YYYY. In the 008 xml the Table Names match the instructions. But in the 015 xml the Table Names are not "Blah blah blah" but intead are "Yadda Blah Yadda" The difference wasn't so bad that I couldn't figure it out but they were different enough to give me pause.
And why did I use Blah and Yadda, because I don't have the actual stuff in front of me here at work :O hehe

PS, I have an 03 VIII with 008 and to the best of my knowledge I have never gotten at p0300. But I have noticed some of the other studder / stumble problems I've heard described and am hoping this solves it.
Smoggrunner, are you talking about me as an "old school tuner"?

I get the knock at low acceleration too and in the same areas. At this point, I think it's transmission or clutch noise as I seem to almost always see it around the 1st to 2nd shift. Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure the ECU thinks it's real knock and adjusts accordingly.
