Cool - had mine apart last weekend making a similar attempt. Ultimatly, my "splice" into the RCA plus proved to have way to much noise in it. I didn't want to sodder into the circuit board that's in the "box" that you pulled out. I just decided to burn MP3 CD's for now. But i don't kow why I didn't just think to pull them back like you did. I coudl put the Y cables in the recessed plugs and expose a new set as well as run an additinal set down the side of the console. I was surprised that you coudl get to this via the head unit uninstall. I must have bigger hands :). I had to go though the center console to get there. Cool fix.

I just fixed this problem on my 2010 ralliart sportback. I ended up taking apart an RCA cable and re-soldering it at a 90 degree angle. I insulated it with shrink insulator. Without all the rubber insulation it was small enough for the door to close easily. I also added in a ground loop isolator to get rid of that humming sound when you connect something to your aux port and charge it from your battery at the same time.

is that cubby avail separately, for non forgate models? Checked mitsuparts.net, couldn't find it.

wow that single pic just saved me from destroying my dash. I'd been trying to take out that area, but it felt like it wouldn't budge. Well now I know why...I was probably about 10lbs of force away from snapping that thing in half!
