What I find puzzling is the fact it "sounded" like my sidepipe was opening up (cant be that) AMS bolted it shut for me. and the vibration. if I have a hole in the exhaust, it would still be loud. I don't think there is room for the DP to seperate and drop any with the cross bar under the car. And why did it do it on the way to work (65 miles 4X), yet it did it ZERO times coming home on the same road, same speed/distance. just a fluke? I will have the answer tonight. Again, thanks for your advice as to what it "could be".

Hummmm sounds familiar...I have the same problem...went to a shop put it on a lift...and they told me the drive shaft bearings are done...if that's the case dude..just get the bearings...i'm getting mines sometime this week and getting them install...RR FTW...I'll keep you updated...{thumbup}

hate to bring this up so long after but i think i might have the same problem i just got a 2005 evo 8 so far i did a clutch job on it , well 1 day coming home on the highway doing around 80 i got the whine (think its the transfer case) , and now its makes a clunking sound when i drive and the car warms up doesn't do it in the cold all vibrates wildly once i go over 40mph i changed the the carrier mount bushing but the didn't help at all the clunking is very loud and it sucks cause i can't go on the highway or do much driving with it like this also when i let off the clutch you can feel what i think is the driveshaft spinning sucks cause everywhere i brought it so far said its the carrier bearing and i can't seem to find the carrier bearing for just the entire driveshaft , just wonder if you found out what the problem is or if anyone could help cause there aren't much ppl here who work on evo's
