Hey guys what headgasket should I use? The one that was on there is a 3 later gasket. It looks like a stock one for an 8. I read that the 9 gasket is 5 later. Is it possible to use the 9 gasket on an 8? Would the 8 gasket be fine? Pulled the head and to me everything looks fine. The cyl walls still have cross hatch on it. Finger nail doesn’t get caught on anything all looks smooth. Taking head to machine shop now. Let’s see.

Just had my head rebuilt & RRE & they used the OEM 9 on my 2006. Not sure what effect it would have to use a 9 gasket on an 8

Can you do me a favor and take pictures of intake ports and inside chamber where the valves are? I'm analyzing the design. And measure the hole dimensions of the intake and exhaust? Thanks!

This is what I found on the diffeneces. Make sure to lay your old head gasket over new and verify that all holes line up and are the same size. In this case, you may need to punch a few holes in the 9 gasket:

the evo 9 gasket is thicker, iirc ~1.2mm, iirc 5 layers

evo 8 iirc ~0.8mm, iirc 3 or 4 layers

if you put a 9 on a 8 head/block, there are 2 holes you need to punch out of the 9 hg to make the water passages of the evo8.

Eh, i just ordered an 8 gasket. I pick up the head on monday. I will take some pictures but the only thing i have to take measurements is a tape measure so i dont know how accurate it will be.

If you got the 9 head gasket, you would have ended up with a smaller compression ratio and less compression when you do your next compression test.

Tape measure will work ;)
I imagine the dimension is about 3cm (1- 3/16inch) by 4cm (1- 9/16inch).
Thank you!

Ok I’ll check it out

guys what do you use to prep the block for the new headgasket? i was thinking just using a blade and brake cleaner to scrape off the old gasket material...i usually use the blade and not give it an angle as to not gouge the surface...ive been reading alot on here and now im not sure because people are saying all kinds of ways...would like to know how you guys do it...

I would do exactly as you described with razor. Not sure about brake cleaner (I would probably stick to motor oil myslef). Check for flatnes using flat edge and feel gauge.

Do you guys take the dowel pins out to clean it up?

2006EvoIXer Mar 12, 2018 08:34 AM

I don't see why not. Be careful not to drop pieces of your old gasket into coolant or oil passages. While you have your head off, run a chase through all your head stud threads, especially the intake corner of cylinder #4. You'll probably have caked on oil there. IIRC, it's a M11 x 1.25 and special order (no one locally carried that near me).

Can I get away without chasing threads? What if I spray brake cleaner in them and blow out with compressed air

You could get away. It will be stiff to tighten your ARP head studs (in my case, it was just the one by cylinder #4). Over time, it could loosen if caked oil dissolves inside thread that was torqued.

GOTCHa

Any luck with measurements?:D
